joining us now is congressman jim himes. thank you for being here.now it was a pain and a long process and a big fight to get this memo declassified after the earlier republican memo had been declassified. are you happy that this is out? are you satisfied in terms of what was redacted and released to the public? >> i am. i sort of chuckled because of course the process to get the republican memo out was all of 72 hours over the objections of the fbi. we wanted to be a little bit more careful, give the fbi and doj, the department of justice, an opportunity to make sure we weren't disclosing additional classified information and, you know, lo and behold it got released on saturday night. not your most intense news hours. i know what's behind the redactions, and the good news is the information we needed to get out there and tell the story that the nunes memorandum was misleading at best, you can read our memorandum and it's pretty esoteric, pretty technical. you can read our memorandum and see the nunes memorandum was an attempt to slime the federal bu

joining us now is democratic congressman jim himes of connecticut. always good to have you on the show. thank you for being with us. >> thank you. >> what do we know? there is an apparent double standard going on here. reading through the notes of the white house counsel about why they were okay releasing the nunes memo doesn't seem to be the same standard. they don't even cite the same executive guidelines in doing it. is that how you feel? this is just politics? >> yeah. this is very simply the white house saying over the objections of the department of justice and fbi we'll release the nunes memo. when the counter factual, rebuttal to the nunes memo comes out and the fbi and the department of justice, well, now those concerns are to be taken seriously. this is a charade, chris, to keep information that would show the nunes memo for what it is, which was conjecture and ill-founded allegations, they are determined to keep that from the public. >> have you seen schiff's memo? >> the democratic memo? >> yeah. >> sure. >> is there fair criticism that t

we're happy to welcome congressman jim himes of connecticut.is the second time senator johnson has made a claim alleging basically some conspiracy based on the texts, only for it to turn out to be either not true or not incontext. what's going on here? >> well, you know, it feels like just a week ago i was standing right here talking about how sad it was that a united states senator would trade his legacy and his dignity, his integrity, for this crazy idea of a secret society, which, of course, as you said, pretty rapidly debunked. now, of course, he has done it again. and, you know, it's worth stepping back here so that, you know, so that the american people understand what is happening in this building. there are a number of individuals who will sacrifice any desire to be loyal to the truth, concern about their own credibility, sadly chairman nunes and the memo and the white house experience and the unmasking scandal, these are all faux scandals that are thrown out there to cause some americans to say, golly, i wonder whether the fbi is on th

i want to bring in congressman jim himes. what are you hearing first of all about the shooting? you're from connecticut and there was a shooting there. >> we're learning with everyone else what's going on in florida. there is a sense of resignation right here right now. the pattern will be perfectly predictable. there will be a moment of silence. people will wish everybody thoughts and prayers and sympathy for the victims, and then the congress of the united states will do absolutely nothing. it is the kind of thing at least those of houston believe the government has the power to reduce this violence, it is something that hits you right in the gut. especially if you come as i do, from a state that has had this violence. >> sandy hook in 2012, i was covering that. it is hard to believe, there were what? 20 children between ages of 6 and 7 who were gunned down. six adults including school staff and faculty before the shooter, adam lanza, turned the gun on himself. what if anything has been done to deal with these kinds of mass shootings since then by the u.s. congress? >> well, t

joining us now congressman jim himes of connecticut.gressman himes, i spoke to you earlier this week. you told me you were worried about redactions from the memo, but you didn't say you were worried about it being blocked completely. are you surprised they took this action? >> no, i'm really not. i quite frankly would have been surprised if the white house had let our memo go out at all. you know, i've never seen anything about donald trump that suggests, particularly after he mischaracterized the memo as -- his claim this was all a hoax, i'm not one bit surprised. i mean -- >> i think we're -- >> -- the justice department and the fbi were very clear it would be in their words extremely reckless to release it. i guess they had some concerns that the democratic memo -- the president decided that he would be extremely reckless with the memo that falsely made his case, but is not going to be reckless or whatever with the memo that -- >> the letter from the white house said they're blocking the memo at this time, not forever. do you think t

. >> jim himes and eric swalwell, all democrats, say that he did not say the dossier was the only reason they sought the warrant. republicans are saying devin nunes on another network said, well, he didn't use those words, but essentially that's what he said. it's a summation. >> he also said he's be happy for the quotes to come out. let's see the interview. >> can i just add one thing? i talked to a republican tonight who said that they couldn't divulge what the information was because it's classified but that there is other information that pre-dated this dossier, not what's in this memo, not this papadopoulos meeting in the beginning of 2016, but something else that we don't know about. so even republicans are acknowledging they have access to that intel. >> go ahead, michael. >> the other thing about the dossier, so here's the dossier. this is it. it's 17 memos, two of which relate to carter page, and they relate specifically to his meeting with this guy sechin, who is the head of the state oil company, and the conversations about page that are reported in the steele dossier is that

. >> we want to bring in democratic congressman jim himes of connecticut, a member of the house intel committee. thanks for spending some time with us. let me ask you what is your prediction on how this vote will go down here in about 50 minutes? >> i'm pretty confident that the house intelligence committee will vote to release the memo. we've gotten that commitment from a number of republicans. so i do imagine that that happens. i was just chuckling there about the extensive and detailed process that the president undertook to do his part in terms of the careful evaluation. of course him saying he was going to release it before he'd even seen it. hey, if he wants to do that with the democratic memo i'm all in. what i do worry about, of course, is that it would surprise me frankly if this president looked at that memo, realized that it was a refutation of what he held up as proof that somehow, you know, people were out to get him and then he allowed it to be released. so i'm standing by for white house noise and white house obstruction around releasing this other memo. >> i talked to
