ki of chemistry d maybe intellectual exchange are you working together to produce? >> we produce some interesting conversations and reactions to what we had exrienced. i am born in the 1950's, during segregation, jimrow in a southern community, raised in a black community in which i was protected from a lot of this. that is a very different - experience from my coproducer and friend who waraised by a white mother, she is biracial, and a white town, in massachusetts. who, to quote her, only learned abouafrican-american experience as bullet points. and our field producer was born in london, raised in neria, and immigrated to america to live in springfield missouri. they did n have the death of black experience in america that i have. so, we would often just after interview or conversation with somebody, we would just throw questionn the air. how did that affect you? how did that fit with what you know about american history? how does that change your view of american history? what did you feel when you were hearing that story? ande tried to be as honest as possible. we recorded many if not most of those conversations. and i used to them when i was writg the book to try to bring a different perspecti
