it's a charge we heard in florida, ohio and colorado and something congressman john lewis calls a throw back to the jimow south. welcome. >> thank you very much. >> what do you expect to happen in pennsylvania? >> well it is my hope and it is my prayer that the state supreme court will declare this law, these provisions unconstitutional. remind me of another period of a dark past and we cannot go back to that period. to be able to cast a vote should be very simple. the vote is precious. it is almost sacred. it should be very easy to cast a vote in the 50 states of the united states of america. >> so i know we've been having this argument for many months now but republicans would say most of us have a picture i.d., it's not hard to get one in the state of pennsylvania. so what's the big deal? >> well, the big deal is very simple. 700, 900,000 people could be denied the right to participate, to cast a vote. that's not right, it's not fair, and it's not just in a democratic society. president jimmie carter said many years ago to cast a vote should be as simple as getting a glass of water. >> this election

great grandparents were riding that underground railroad, back when john lewis was marching across that bridge in selma, and jim cliborne was sitting in jail, the injustice was written in big bold letters on the face of our law. while we may have had differences over strategy, the battles we needed to fight were clear. we knew we needed to end slavery. we knew we needed an amendment to our constitution. to end segregation, we needed the supreme court to overturn the lie of separate but equal. to reach a ballot box we needed congress to pass the voting rights act. so we moved forward, and we won those battles, and we made progress that our parents and our grandparents could never have dreamed of. but today, while there are no more whites only signs keeping us out, no one barring our children from the schoolhouse door, we know that our journey is far, far from finished. [applause] but in many ways, the path forward for this next generation is far less clear. what exactly do we do about children who are languishing in crumbling schools? what about kids growing up in neighborhoods where they don't have opportunitie

so we've gone from jim crowe in the days of congressman lewis and dr. king to james crowe jr. esquire now. we've got to fight this and we've got to fight it until we defeat it. this is unacceptable. >> in terms of predicting whether or not these new laws about making it harder to register to vote are going to have an impact on the election outcome this november, one thing to consider is this is still in some cases undecided. it was today or yesterday that a federal judge in ohio ordered the republican secretary of state in ohio to appear personally in federal court to explain why it is he's not planning on enforcing that judge's order that ohio needs to have its early voting days restored. ohio voters have had early voting right up through the last weekend before election day all through the last most recent elections including the primaries for this year. but the republican secretary of state wants to take it away for november. you can have it when you're deciding which republican is going to run against president obama, but not when president obama himself is on the ballot.
