nbc's jim maceda is live for us following all the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lynn. well, rebels swept into the capital and quickly controlled about 80, even 90% of the city. but as you say, the fighting isn't over yet. the gadhafi tanks are firing, according to some rebels, indiscriminately outside his tripoli port. one rebel fighting saying that -- and i quote him -- there is gunfire everywhere. rebels are trying to move house to house looking for those pro gadhafi snipers who are hitting them with great effect. now there's reports that the son and commander of the brigade in charge of trip ole, that he's moving his force into central tripoli to take on the rebels. while all this heavy resistance is happening, celebrations are taking place, mostly by residents. and in what used to be the green square, the heart of gadhafi support, which has been renamed liberty square. one report is that he's being treated in a hospital in east tripoli. one of my sours say that he's still in the capital, that was several hours ago. >>

jim maceda, nbc news, london. >>> now we turn to a developing story in this country with millions of americans stretched along the east coast on summer vacation, we have a hurricane to tell you about tonight, hurricane irene. its heading towards the bahamas and then later this week targeting the united states. late this afternoon, the international space station took some photos of irene as it moved off puerto rico. weather channel meteorologist brian norcross is with us tonight, and, brian, all those eyes are on the blue lines, the projection maps doesn't make the folks in the carolinas very happy. >> not the carolinas and not points north, brian. it's an 80-mile-per-hour category 1 hurricane now but it's forecast to get much stronger and head toward the eastern u.s. takes a look at the track map, we'll show you where it is right now. that's just north of the dominican republic here, it's forecast by tomorrow to move by and intensify into a category 2 hurricane and then as you said, head into the bahamas. then as you say, headed into the bahamas this could be a very significant hurr

jim maceda is following the fast moving developments from london. jim what can you tell us? hi, chris. one report from israeli military radio claim as gun battle between an unnamed militant group and the idf may still be going on and then that other unconfirmed report of a fourth attack. here's hats coming from the idf. about mid-day today on a desert road between beersheba, in southern israel, at least three gunmen jumped out of a car and fired at a passenger bus. there were civilians and soldiers onboard that bus. that turned quickly into a firefight. shortly after that, another gunman fired at what is described as an anti-tank rocket at a passenger car. this was in the same general vicinity and at the same time an israeli military patrol perhaps approaching was hit by an ied. a complex and coordinated attack suggesteding militants. ambulance services are reporting at least six killed including soldiers and civilians and about a dozen wounded. violence, chris, in this area of north sinai is relatively rare, just on the other side of the border with israel, but it has been
