. >> our first guest, jim mcdermott. good morning. >> good morning. >> stories talking about the medicare bill that was passed yesterday. tell us about what it does. what did it mean for doctors under this system? >> well, we put a provision into the law back in 1988 or '98 and tb ineffective in increasing the cost of medicare but we've not been able to admit it and repeal it and replace it with something else. we've been patching it every year for last 12 years. this year we decided let's fix it and take it out. it always had the potential for cutting doctors payments by 12% or 15%. it had gotten to the point where there would have been a 25% cut and that was never going to happen. so we finally fixed it generally, got tired of putting patches on it and that's what happened. >> fix it generally what do you mean by that? >> we took it out. we took out the sgr, the sustained growth rate. doctor's offices were supposed to grow only a certain amount each year. and of course they grew more than that or didn't and if they gre

joining me now is jim mcdermott from washington and editor at large if the atlantic.ntlemen, great to have you with us. you first. what message does this send today to the advocates of more sanctions. were they wrong? have we gone far enough to say sanctions have done what they were supposed to do and we don't have to look any further? >> my belief is the president has handled this brilliantly. he held back the the people who wanted to throw a monkey wrench into the negotiations, and he has accomplished what he set out to do, bring a comprehensive agreement to the american people. that doesn't mean for one second that those who want to throw a monkey wrench in his plans won't trood to do it in the future. but do it at their own risk. the question you have to ask is what is your alternative? you going to keep squeezing? you think iran will go away? the president put a plan on the table to control it for 15 years. it's a fabulous piece of work. i know there's details. the devil is always in the details. and you want to see the written agreement. but he has a skeleton ag

host: jim mcdermott joining us. many stories in the paper talking about the medicare bill that was passed yesterday. tell us a little bit about what it does. what does it mean for. doctors in the system? caller: we put it back into the law in 1988 and hit has been effective in helping the increasing cost of medicare. we have not been able to replace it with something else here and we have been catching it every year for the last 12 years. this year we decided to fix it and take it out. it always has the potential work cutting doctor payments by 10% or 12% or 15%. it had gotten to the point where there would have been a 25% and dr. payments for medicare. that was never going to happen. we finally fixed it generally. we got tired of waiting patches on it. host: generally, what do you mean by that? caller: we took out of the gsr the sustained growth rate. doctors offices only supposed to grow a certain amount each year. of course a group more than that or they did not. if they grew more there's a post to get a cut in t

brady: madam speaker, i want to thank my colleagues jim mcdermott, and marsha blackburn for joining me in leading the fight to make this middle class tax provision permanent. this provision is about tax fairness and equal treatment. if taxpayers and income tax states can deduct their state and local income tax, so should residents of sales tax states. that in america is just fair. this provision helps hardworking taxpayers keep a little more of what they earn, which is ever more important to families given the stagnant paychecks over the past number of years. more than 10 million american taxpayers in nine states depend on this commonsense deduction, and the dollars that stay in the local community help grow their economy rather than grow washington's economy. a permanent state and local sales tax deduction provides certainty to american families makes federal budgets scorekeeping more honest, and removes the as tirrisk from this temporary provision so the pro-growth tax reform can advance. it's certainly important to texas since its been restored, my neighbors have saved more than $10
