[applause] rep. mcgovern: good morning, everybody. i know it's not easy to get up early in the morning. the only thing worse is being the first speaker of the morning. but thomas, thank thank you very much. i want to thank the consumer federation bringing you all here today, represented from consumer advocate organizations with food industry, nonprofits as well as governmental officials and come together get some important conversations about agriculture and food policy and nutrition. so i welcome the opportunity to be here. i probably should say at the outset that sometimes people think because my last name is mcgovern that i'm related to george mcgovern who was the senator from south dakota and ran for president in 1972. while i worked as an intern in his office in the senate one i was in college and a beacon when a major strength in the world, a great inspiration can we are not related. i say that because when i was giving a coffee in the lobby somewhat in the camp came up and said they were longtime supporters and my dad. and they

speaker, because i'm not going to confess to sharing my admiration for jim mcgovern all that often on the house floor but i was with folks up there today who really do commit themselves to making a difference in our country and it was nice to have a colleague ton the floor, again with whom i disagree about much, but who was putting everything he had, as he does every day intoork an issue he cares a lot about. that's all my constituents back home want, mr. speaker, is to believe we have sincere, earnest folk, working on sinceres a dnd -- sincere and difficult issues. i thank my friend for that. my second confession is that ordinarily i enjoy listening to the reading clerk read the rule. it gets me all wound up about how the process is and of course today she was talking about all the amendments we're going to make in order, we're making every single amendment offered by both sides of the aisle in order on this underlying bill. but i found myself thinking back to the days when i was a young man. i came up with with my class, i was sitting up here in the gallery, i worked in to the floor
