jim mcgovern got up on the dais and was trying to continue to conduct business. floor leader was saying that we should all just stay calm, stay in our seats. by then, that was sort of wishful thinking. nobody was really paying much attention. we were not paying much attention to what was being said on the house floor. pretty soon thereafter, one of the floor staff took over the microphone and directed everybody to look beneath their seats and locate the gas masks that are underneath every seat. and with that, things got a little panicky. first of all, most of us did not know there were gas masks under our seats. second, just the call to have them available was unnerving. then almost immediately after that we saw a big rush of members leaving the house floor down below, starting on the republican side. there is no such thing as a republican side, but there is in a practical manner. so we saw a big rush of people leaving out of the doors over on the republican side, and democrats were following from the democratic side over to the republican side and exiting that w
