let's go back to jim miklaszewski inside the white house. what have you learned? >> we're hearing now that in fact a man, a sieve icivilian, with a weapon, as he approached a secret service guard post as 17th and e street. that's around the corner on the other side of the executive office building, at least a block if not more, from the white house. but nevertheless, it was on the edge of the white house compound where the exec office building is located, aside the white house. and as this gunman approached, law enforcement officials were not clear if it was secret service or whether it was local police, apparently, as we understand it, ordered the man to put down the gun. he did not, and he was shot by an officer. either secret service or local police. and as pete williams said earlier, he's been transported to a nearby hospital. his condition is unknown. not clear if this gunman -- alleged gunman, said anything to any of the officers, but obviously out of all limits of precaution, the officers apparently were forced to shoot the suspect who allegedly refused ord

jim miklaszewski is in the white house briefing room, temporary mandatory home for a lot of members of the media. jim? >> the lockdown here in the white house has been lifted. reporters and camera crews are now permitted to go outside onto the white house lawn. and since we're able to move here from the building itself, one would imagine that we could also exit the white house grounds proper and get outside the fence onto pennsylvania avenue. but i'd like to stress again that the white house itself and anybody in the white house, was not in any apparent threat, because the shooting occurred at a guard post, a secret service guard post on the opposite side of the old executive office building, which, as you walk, is about -- at least a block and a half to as long as two blocks from the white house itself. and while we are told that this individual had a gun and was apparently at least brandishing the gun, and had been ordered several times to put down the weapon and did not and was subsequently shot, we've had nobody tell us that there was a shot fired by the individual suspect, or whet

nbc's jim miklaszewski is live at the white house. what do you know about mansour and why do you feel the united states needed to take him out. >> they wanted to strike at the heart of the taliban. to do that, they went after their leader, the leader of the taliban for a little less than a year. nevertheless he was considered to be the cement of taliban holding it together. now the way this happened, surveillance drones had actually watched mansour and others get into a vehicle and drive off and then not one but several drones launched hell fire missiles which as we've seen from the photographs of the site, obliterated the target. u.s. officials are confident that mansour was killed in that strike. now, there are some analysts who believe that this will fracture the taliban, without mansour's strong leadership it will splinter and diminish their military strength. but quite frankly, over the years, the taliban has proven very resilient. after all, they've suffered 15 years of u.s. military strikes, america's longest war and have still

steve clemons, and chief pentagon correspondent for nbc news, jim miklaszewski. re is active fighting going on to regain the isis stronghold of fallujah. that being led by u.s. aircraft, retaking this iraqi city, that's been a major challenge for the security forces there. explain why they haven't been able to get better traction. >> quite frankly, fallujah being a sunni town was not a high priority for the shia-led government there in baghdad and they didn't have the kind of capable, well-trained ground forces to be able to take fallujah. but fallujah got the attention of the government there in baghdad in recent weeks because it became a staging area for some of those suicide bombings, isis-led suicide bombings inside the capital killing hundreds of iraqis there inside baghdad. so at that point it got the attention of the government, of the military, and they in fact with the u.s. air support did launch -- begin to launch this attack to try to retake fallujah. >> mik, how significant is this in the overall prospect of doing that? >> well, it could be significant
