take a listen. >> jim nolan with "richmond times dispatch."y with regard to this son. tell me what you have learned, what happened to him monday, yesterday. >> well, we're reporting today on our website, timesdispatch.com, that gus had been evaluated monday for a mental health issue under what's called an emergency custody order. that basically is a determination as to whether he should be held for an additional period of time, up to two days under a temporary detention order. unfortunately, after the evaluation, it was found there were not enough psychiatric beds available to accommodate him. so gus was released, apparently, into his family's custody. and then shome hours later, approximately 7:30 this morning, there was a report of this assault on his father. when authorities arrived, they found him suffering from a gunshot wound from which he ultimately did not survive. >> walk me back. so before he went to this -- it was the bath county hospital, the son gus, on monday -- do we know about any kind of specific event or events that led to hi

bill: jim nolan a reporter for the richmond times herald. good on r morning to you. cide is the thinking yesterday. is that still the working theory now, jim? >> yes it is, bill. they're conducting a autopsy in row an nokia which will roanoke. will determine the cause of death for gus deeds. that is the theory they're working under. the son and father had an altercation at the residence yesterday morning around 7:30. that resulted in cuts to senator deeds's head and torso. he left the scene at some point later. the son is believed to have gone into the home and committed suicide. >> what are we learning or what do we understand about the mental health issues of the son possibly, jim? >> well we reported on times dispatch.com today, our newspaper, that gus deeds had a, a history of some mental difficulties which culminated in a emergency custody order that was put into effect at bath community hospital yesterday. much bath is southwest virginia, toward the edge of the state and after that hearing it was, or after that evaluation, rather, by the community service board,

. >> jim nolan joins us by phone. that was a few hours ago, the update at the police news conference. do we know any more regarding a suspect or information as far as the investigation, if they are not looking for another person in that home? >> well, tamron, the real issue seems to be whether in fact the gunshot wound that killed gus deeds was self-inflicted or not. investigators are still have not been able to determine exactly whether that was the case or not. they had gotten some statements from senator deeds who is conscious and talking to investigators and family in the hospital. but they haven't been able to determine that. what we do know is there aren't any other suspects and there wasn't anybody else in the house at the time. so clearly this is a father/son assault and senator deeds was stabbed by his son. we don't know the rest of the details about the death of gus deeds. >> governor elect terry mcauliffe released a statement saying this is a truly sad day for virginia and many who creigh, and speaking to h

jim nolan joins us now.etails on where the attack apparently took place and more information on this report that creigh deeds' son, there was an attempt to at least get him hospitalized. >> yes, tamron. we're reporting on times dispatch.com that the altercation stabbing incident took place outside of the home around 7:25 in the morning on tuesday. and we're also reporting and reported yesterday that the family had sought a psychiatric evaluation for gus deeds on monday evening. but gas deeds was released from that community after it was determined that there was not a bed available for an extended psychiatric stay. of course, today we're hearing conflicting reports. the local official said there weren't beds available. but now some psychiatric facilities are saying they did have beds available. clearly this will be a critical area of inquiry when it comes to understanding just how a man who was determined to have some kind of psychological needs was not allowed or enable to go to a psychiatric facility. >> w
