let's go back to the masn broadcast booth and welcome back in jim palmer. jim, jeremy guthrie pretty good in this game. he couldn't survive the one inning and it seemed like once that error was made, he was over the plate four hits in the inning and couldn't stop the bleed eeg couldn't. i think there's a tendency a lot of times either your catcher comes out and talks to you. we know matt wieters sinexperienced. he's not going to do that. probably something deal as he gets more maturity and more experience in the big leagues. a lot of times what you got to do is step off the mound. what i noticed is if you can look at jeremy guthrie's face, he's starting to grit his teeth. again, he was very good tonight. he probably had his best slider early on in the game. in the fourth inning, leadoff walk. makes good pitch. there's going to be a 4-6-3 double play. all of a sudden, the a series of bad pitches. hanging slider to wright. high fastball to church. hang slider to sheffield. you can see every ball up in the middle of the plate. right here after trying to get mu

let's take you back out to camden yards, rob dibble and jim palmer standing by. k about the series this weekend? >> thanks, guys. well, jim, that was a great series. we get the finale, but really the last two games were much better than the first game where it was kind of a blowout. >> it's kind of interesting. the nationals had beat the red sox, full houses in washington. the orioles had gone down, they scored one run in 20 1/3 inning, get swept down in miami. we have adam jones hitting .200 for the month of june. so the orioles needed to win on friday, but they end up 11-1 but it was a very close game until the 6th inning. on saturday night, again, a early lead by the nationals, the orioles come back, they hit three home runs, the hanging change-up that one of the better young players for the orioles nolan reimold hits off of martis. so this is a situation where today you have your best left- hander going out there and the orioles didn't do a whole lot of things wrong on friday and saturday. the nationals seemed to take care of it. >> you saw a lot of our young

i feel like father flanagan with these two up here, jim palmer there, rob dibble. despite a lot of glitches by both pitchers, both are still in the game. >> jim p.: the score is similar to what it was going in the middle innings last night, then that eight-run inning the orioles were able to come up with. >> rob: this kind of performance, just what the doctor ordered. shairon martis going out throwing 90-mile an hour fastballs. shairon martis has the change- up and the fastball, keeping the orioles off balance. >> jim p.: you know this is a game of adjustment. when martis pitched against the orioles, adam jones hit a home run in washington. he is better tonight than he was back then. i know he struggled, but that's what i think you want to see in a 22-year-old pitcher. are you better as the season progresses even though you're going to struggle. that's part of learning the game. that's what steve mccaddie who has come on as a pitching coach said. >> rob: you have to make mistakes on your own to learn at this level. we have so many guys, he's got less than 20 starts

.   >> bob: bob carpenter back with rob dibble, jim palmer.ow, when the nats were going well at new york and against toronto, these were the kind of games they were winning because their starters were able to get deep into the game. >> rob: this is where john lannan has been at his best. he can get the double play and he can pitch his way out. that's pitching to me. you're able to work it out and keep your team in a game. this is a tight ballgame. it's probably going to go over to the bullpen. that's where we've been having a little bit of a problem. >> jim p.: he got wieters to get the double play. i tell you, i've already learned, i've only seen adam dunn play on two sundays, he has 8 rbi's and two home runs. i'm not pitching to him the rest of the afternoon. he's been that good against the orioles. boim matt wieters, bottom of the fifth. john lannan, after a few struggles early has a very economical pitch count. he's right at about 14 pitches per inning threw his first four. and usually when john pitches like this, guys will start swinging

jim palmer, that's not a surprise because as we've said for two seasons, that's what the orioles are working on correcting. >> jim: exactly, trying to get better. i think tonight jeremy guthrie will pitch for the orioles. he's 4-6. what he's really been hurt by. he's been looking for all those little earns answers by the home run ball. last game against the mariners. threw the ball great a couple of hanging sliders. again, bergesen has been good. hill from time to time has been very good for the starting staff. berken will pitch in this series. he's been good sometimes. he's a young pitcher just up to the big leagues. bottom line, you want to het help your bullpen. the bullpen has been terrific over last two weeks. if you're jeremy guthrie, thief they've got 19 runs last two games. hope you get some of those runs tonight. >> gary: up against a team that's hurting literally with a lot of injuries. maybe the right time to take on this club even though there are a couple in the lineup who are still red-hot. we'll be back. it's the mets-o's from camden next. and they're getting in the way

pitches n a lot of cases, i've got to go back to the days when mike flanagan was on the mound and jim palmer and those guys. as the game went on's started to get a little tired, the pitches got better and the break on the ball got bert and they changed speeds on the ball better. this is when koji seemed to me like he was starting to get locked in last night late in the ballgame he made better pitches. he got that double play when he really needed it. you saw it on the replay. he started to kind of fall into a nice pattern right there of the i would have liked to see him extended. maybe his elbow wasn't positioned where he didn't want to hurt himself so he was taken out of the ballgame. i've seen it too many times where when a guy gets a little tired, everything becomes a lot better. >> actually, this game came down to the 12th inning and rib single by jorge cantu who gave the marlins the 7-6 victory. gregg zaun revisits the play at the plate when the winning runs scored. >> he got a good hop out there and i think it's an above average throw by luke a little bit of a short hop and a tough pla

bob carpenter is back with rob did i believe and jim palmer. so interesting ballgame so far, but the o's probably should be further ahead. >> bob: i have to think that detwiler looks like he is out of command. make the guys playing behind you think they have a chance to win that double play was huge, not only for the nationals, but for detwiler because he makes them think they're still in the game. >> rob: and you get the lead 3- 1 and you put a zero up there. that will keep the momentum in the orioles' dug-out. >> bob: interesting interleague series over the years. the nationals were able to sweep here two years ago, but in the other two series at camden yards, both in 2006 and 2008, the orioles have taken two out of three, 2-3. and detwiler, adam jones takes one outside and the bottom of the fifth is underway. >> rob: jim, you talk about this, the young guy get as little flustered, starts overthrowing and starting throwing a lot more balls and his pitch count rices quickly. >> jim: do you see the difference when he keeps the ball down? >> jim
