perry campaign opponent. thanks for joining me tonight, jim. >> great to be with you, lawrence, thanks. >> rick perry switchedes in 1990 at george w. bush's urging. he ran against you, ran against you for texas agriculture commissioner. he won that race. did he win it because of his great performance in your debate? >> well, we had no debate that i recall anyway, and, in fact, my opponent at that time, 1990, was really not rick perry, it was carl rove, who used his patented trash politics to come after me. perry was the product of the chemical lobbyists in the state legislature. he was a democrat at the time, and he carried legislation to take away the pesticide authority i had exercised as agriculture commissioner of tech. they did not succeed, so carl rove got perry to switch parties to run against me, but perry was inconsequential back in those days, he never campaigned statewide and didn't know anything about dallas or houston or south texas, so rove sent him out to west texas to go to farm bureau meetings while rove raised about $3 million and put them in trash ads. my real opponent was carl rove. >> wha

perry. i wanted to show you a little bit, jim, of anita perry in iowa earlier this week. >> the last thing i tell him when he goes out the door is, be yourself. down as a fighter and this is his opportunity to show up. i want him to say, maybe i shouldn't say this. >> so how do you assess the wives' impact on their husbands' campaigns? >> in both cases, it makes them more likable. makes them more normal. i think when voters are looking at these candidates one way to validate a candidate and validate decisions you've made is to show you have a good marriage, a good wife. and in both cases you see these politicians doing it. for mitt romney in particular. he's really struggled to show people he's a normal guy who has a family, a normal life, despite his great looks and all the money he's made throughout his life. i think this is part of that effort. and for rick perry he sees his wife as a real strategic asset in this race. you know, she wasn't that involved in the races in texas, and they feel that getting her out there, she can draw big crowds, and that she's a forceful advocate for his posi

those seven other republicans are waiting for rick perry, just waiting to give him the welcome into campaign 2012. jimat here? an initiation of some sorts? >> yeah. you could say, brooke, that it's fitting that this debate is happening about an hour drive from hollywood. this is show time for rick perry. as you noted he has raced to the top of this field. he only announced his campaign less than a month ago and already he's the front-runner without even breaking a sweat. and so expect rick perry to take some attacks from all sides tonight. mitt romney has a lot at stake because he was once the front-runner in this race. and he has occasionally in not so subtle fashion gone after rick perry from time to time. but just this morning, gop strategist carl rove sort of telegraphed one of the zingers we might hear. he brought up the controversial anti-washington book called "fed up" in which he refers to social security as a ponzi scheme and carl rove says that could be toxic not only in a general election, but in a gop nomination battle. >> here's what he had to say. >> they are going to have to find a way
