jim sciutto joins us with details from washington. becky, so many dead, so many injured. what's the latest? >> we're at war with terrorists. that is what the interior minister said just a couple of hours ago. it is 5:00 in the morning here and there will be those in france who will be waking up to the enormity of what happened in the southern beach resort of nice, where 80 people overnight have been killed and as you rightly point out, 20 seriously wounded, maybe more, in what was an horrific attack, a terror has struck france once again, said francois holland. let me tell you exactly what we know to have happened. a driver of a large white truck drove that truck down a beach front road.

i want to bring in becky anderson in paris, jim sciutto will join us from washington.o many people dead, so many more injured. take us through what happened, becky. >>. >> the state of emergency will be extended. it was supposed to be lifted late next week. this is what we know at this point, don. at least 77 people dead, as many as 100 injured. the president said as many as 20 of those in intensive care. a driver of a large white truck drove along what is known as the promenade des anglais, they gathered to watch the fireworks. it was 10:00 local time. that is six hours ago when this incident happened. after that, the truck simply carried on driving along that street some 2 kilometers or more than a while and we are told mowing people down. the truck was full of guns and explosives as he discovered after having shot and killed the driver. there were many, many international tourists who were there to celebrate what is supposed to be a day july the 14th. this is effectively independence day, a national holiday here in france, a day of trauma for the french. >> effectiv

all right, jim sciutto, thanks very much. let's discuss these developments with my next guest, democratic congressman adam schiff of california, he's the ranking member, the top democrat of the house intelligence committee and i know congressman you've been well briefed on this. what is your assessment? >> my assessment is the russians have the motive, they have the means, certainly, we have seen them interfere in the political affairs and elections of other countries, particularly adversaries so i wouldn't put it past the russians for a minute. it's going to take time for the fbi to do the investigation to make attribution. they may never be able to publicly make attribution but i'm not surprised that crowd strike, which is quite reputable, has reached a conclusion there's russian hands involved and that may ultimately be where we end up. >> i want you to listen to what robbie mook, the campaign manager for hillary clinton, said to cnn about his theory behind this dnc hack. >> what further experts are saying is that then bec

jim sciutto is our chief national security correspondent. we have teams working on this. >> so you have the mayor saying tens dead. french ambassador mentioning as well the possibility of gunfire. i spoke with a witness, an american pilot 15 feet away he said which this truck drove into the crowd. his description was the truck, the driver was mowing bodies over, that he accelerated as he hit those bodies. he said to me that he only saw one driver, one person in the cab of the truck. as he ran away, he did hear gunfire. wasn't clear to him -- >> take a look at the picture on the right. that's courtesy of our affiliate appearing to be the truck that rammed into that huge crowd. >> that's right. sadly we're seeing pictures of many bodies on the ground which helps explain the death toll. as a matter of context, vehicles have been used as weapons of terror in france including 2014 including attacks on police. i've spoken to u.s. officials which say say it's too early to know if it's terrorism. it would take time to make such a determination. >> government firms are saying perha

as well. >> jim sciutto, becky anderson, appreciate the update. we are continuing to cover this, really this ever-changing situation. we are learning more and more pieces of information minute by minute. the death toll now stands at 77. that according to french officials. as many as 100 people, though, have been injured and -- but again, that death toll very likely expected to rise given the number of injuries and the types of injuries that we have seen on some videos, most of those we are not showing you. they are simply too gruesome or graphic to actually show. but this situation which occurred as becky anderson was reporting around 10:00 local time, continued, the driver of the vehicle moving for some two kilometers, although the exact distance is not known. it's not clear, here's what we don't know. there is early reports that this began with gunfire and then the vehicle began plowing through people. it's not clear frankly whether that was actually the case, gunfire coming from the vehicle itself, or whether that was police officials or law en

said, the death toll climb doing 60 and it has been going up and at least 100 others injured and jim sciutto has been covering the story from the beginning and jim had a chance to talk to a witness who was only 15 feet away when this truck driver came in in this horrible attack and what were you able to learn? >> reporter: that's right. i spoke to an american pilot who was in the midst of the crowd, he was 15 feet away as this truck plowed into the crowd and sadly, he described how intentional this was. he told me that the truck driver was mowing bodies over and accelerating as he was sitting hitting these people in the streets. i spoke to another witness that said these streets were blocked off. there were no vehicles meant to be there. these were pedestrian avenues at the peak of the fireworks for what is in effect france's celebration, bastille day. he intentionally broke through the cordons and intentionally accelerated as he was driving through the crowd and again, accelerating as he hit people, clearly intentional. i spoke to other witnesses who then heard gun fire after that -- those

i'm jim sciutto in washington and the breaking news tonight. isis says its terrorists are holding at least 20 people hostage right now at a restaurant in dhaka, the capital city of bangladesh. the siege, which has been under way for more than seven hours now is in the heart of the diplomatic zone just a mile or so from the u.s. embassy there. u.s. officials say all american personnel are accounted for and it's advising all u.s. citizens in the city to shelter in place. at least two police officers have been killed and 40 people injured in the standoff. bangladeshi television stations are in blackout, in effort not to give away any details of the police's tactical response. as far as we know right now, police have yet to make any contact, get any demands from the terrorists inside. it is very possible, it may be likely that if this is indeed isis, a claim senior u.s. officials do doubt, there may be no demands. that is the chilling reality right now in a week in which the terror group has shown its ability to strike across the globe. we are cove

i do want to get back to the breaking news with jim sciutto with the cyber attack in the clinton campaignjim, what do you know about this attack? what are you hearing? >> this is a very expansive attack and we knew that the triple c, the democratic congressional campaign committee opened up to a whole host of candidates around the county. the clinton campaign says this is a voter analytic tool, one that's actually shared by other candidates. they say no internal systems were affected, but the fact is targeting the clinton campaign and accessing data in the clinton campaign and the one common thread throughout this, kate, although they have not been identified publicly, a source is telling us repeatedly that russia is the most likely actor here and this gets to the question of motivation and an attempt to influence the election and an attempt to embarrass the u.s. political process. all of those are potentially bad things and it's something that u.s. officials are taking care tonight. >> are they being careful to say these are three separate attacks that look similar or are all signs point

and jim sciutto, you are watching the u.s. part of this, and i know that the president has pledged total u.s. support to the french in this investigation, and in fact, the president ordered that all u.s. flags be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims. there you can see the white house, the flag is flying at half-staff already, but they will be flown at half-staff now for the next few days in honor of the victims of the terror attack, and what kind of role will the u.s. play in the investigation? >> the u.s. a has a close intelligence sharing with france, and particularly on the counter intelligence decisions, and i spoke to an intelligence official who said that attacker was not on the radar before and not known to be a suspect. that is a key issue, because you may remember in the charlie hebdo attack in january of last year in paris that the kalashi brother brothers were were on the watch list, but taken off, and he is not seen as a threat, and he was not attached to any terrorist group or islamic terrorist group, and n

let me bring in jim sciutto here, our chief national security correspondent just to talk a little bits we stay on some of these pictures, jim. talk to me about what presence is known with either isis or al qaeda within bangladesh. >> well, we know, sadly, that both are present and capable in the country. as you say, we don't know which group is responsible for this but we do know that isis has a presence, has carried out attacks, including horrific hacking attacks, as you mentioned earlier, of bloggers, hindu leader recently. but we also know that al qaeda is affiliated -- it is aqis, al qaeda in the subcontinent. interestingly enough, just yesterday the u.s. designated aqis as a terrorist group after it claimed to have killed a u.s. citizen in bangladesh. so you have two groups active there. and if it is one of these groups, aqis or isis, they do not treat hostages well. that is a grave situation if that is involved in this case. they are also the kinds of groups that are difficult to negotiate with, difficult and impossible to negotiate with. so it goes to what is the police respons

first a update from you, jim sciutto. this is a fast moving story. apparently marshall law has been declared. >> the turkey military saying they have imposed marshall law. that means a curfew for the turkish people. they are also saying they will uphold their international agreements. turkey is a u.s. nato ally, and then it went into a list of justifications. they said to restore democracy, restore human rights, restore corruption. and in part in reaction to recent acts of terror. they say they're doing this to help make the country safe. we had a truly remarkable moment, the elected turkish president erdogan, gave his statement on skype. and he was claiming to the turkish people that he is still president and encouraging them, in his words, to go in the streets to support democracy. that shows he is a president that could not get to the capital or a broadcaster. >> it looks like the military took over some of the state networks. they're making statements on turkish state television. >> troops were seen outside of headquarters and going inside. and a

i want to bring in cnn jim sciutto and ivan watson. they're both there as well. ivan is our senior international correspondent and jim is our chief national security correspondent. both of them have a wealth of knowledge on this particular situation and situations like this. jim, what does the u.s. government think the current situation is in turkey this morning? >> reporter: u.s. officials have been very cautious throughout. early on they were cautious to identify this as a couple. in fact they used the term uprising and then they took some time, three, four hours into it before making a more public statement when you had both the president and secretary of state john kerry issuing unequivocal backing for the democratically elected government of turkey and in fact opposing the coup and saying people should support their democratically elected leaders. they have been watching this closely. they've been getting incomplete information just as we've been getting incomplete information and that's even while i'm told they've stayed in contact as best they can with thei

let's check in with cnn's chief national security correspondent jim sciutto with more on what the u.sregard to this attack here. jim, what are you learning? >> reporter: keep in mind, brooke, the u.s., as you know, has a very close intelligence share something relationship with france, particularly on issues of counterterror. they are telling me that just like the french have said, this suspect was not on the radar prior to this attack. he was not a known jihadist, known person with ties, for instance, to groups such as isis. so he is someone who's come out of the blue which is adding to the confusion of what exactly motivation was. that's one thing. what they are doing now is looking to see if there was any evidence of communication between him and other known, whether it's isis or other terror groups, other known jihadis, to date, i'm told, to this hour, there is no such evidence. but that's something they'll look at gathering his cell phones, computers, et cetera, keeping in mind the u.s. has enormous capabilities, more than the french. that's the kind of help they'll be offering t

i want to bring in national security correspond jim sciutto. jim, based on that 15 minutes from the fbi director, we learned a lot about how e-mails were handled during secretary clinton's time during secretary of state or, as the fbi director said, mishandled, it was extremely careless with mao than 100 e-mails marked classified being sent on the private server and eight marked top seek cret the time they were sent. >> reporter: absolutely. none was either marked classified or deemed classified at the time and was deemed later. why does it matter? what are the big questions is when you mishandle classified information, who then has abscess to it. as director comey said, one of the key questions they were trying to get answered, did foreign governments, did foreign actors get access to this classified information? his answer was there was no direct evidence that her servers, plural, not just one, were hacked successfully. he went on to say because of the actors we're talking about here, russia, china, others, they would not likely see direct evi

joining us now, our chief national security correspondent jim sciutto. how soon do you think the 28 page also be released? >> likely before the weekend as long as about to go out of town on recess. it's going to come out of congress because this was originally a congressional document, produced by the house intelligence committee in 2002 and classified since then. the president made a public commitment in april in an interview to declassify and release the pages to the public. shortly after that, the director of national intelligence, james clapper, said that process should be completed around mid june, that's the declassification because the intelligence community has to take out anything they see as secret. then you have the political process as to who is going to send it out into the public sphere. the decision is made because this is a congressional product originally, back in 2002, it will be coming out of the hill, most likely the senate and house intelligence committees. >> the question is, bob graham, former chairman of the senate intelligence co

let's bring in chief national correspondent jim sciutto. he was listening in on the press conference with us. jim, have you been doing a lot of talking with your sources in regards to where things stand into this e-mail leak. honestly, i want to get your reaction what you heard donald trump say. >> first, let's set it straight, donald trump says it's doubtful or unlikely that russia hacked into the u.s. e-mails. that's in direct contradiction to what the government says. when they a russia they're not talking about random hackers working for no one. this is seen as a russian intelligence operation with the approval at the highest level. this, in their view, goes right to the top. and just to echo david gregory's point. i think people in the intelligence community all the time, not just russian hacks, chinese hacks, north korean hacks, they take these seriously. they look at them very seriously, they look at them as in effect, a low-level war. that's what russia views them, russia views the attacks in what they call an information space. a fr

i'm jim sciutto in washington. we have breaking news right now from a city already shaken by unspeakable tragedy. witnesses are reporting that police headquarters in dallas is on lockdown. security across the city has been raised. that after sources tell cnn that a threat, an anonymous threat was made against the police department. but that threat being taken very seriously right now. an official source inside the police department there telling cnn, this just a few minutes ago, that the police department is taking, quote, precautionary measures now. we are watching dallas. we will update you as we hear those developments. it's not even been two days since that gunman opened fire on a protest crowd in dallas, killing those five police officers. so again, let me tell you what we know at this point, that is that the dallas police department has placed the city on heightened security. this after receiving an anonymous threat against the police department. we've been told that media are being moved away from the front

cnn chief national security correspondent jim sciutto is working this one for us from washington.ms of ties with saudi arabia, significance of the documents and what are we expecting to learn? >> i've spoken to people who's read these 28 pages which are actually 29 pages, i'm told. keep in mind, they are classified until they come out tomorrow. but in general terms it will show what this 2002 investigation found about employees of the saudi government or people with ties to the saudi government, particularly in the l.a. area had in particularly with two of the 9/11 hijackers. keep in mind these were early leads. couple years later the 9/11 commission report found -- concluded there was no official saudi role. but i have spoken to people who have read them and said, listen, there were some leads that weren't fully explored in their view. now it will be in the public eye and there are going to be a lot of people piping in saying that there's more there thank the governmethe government admitted at the time. >>> for now, straight ahead -- multiple sources, clues, perhaps even a flower
