i want to bring in our chief national security correspondent jim sciutto and shimon prokupez. jim sciutto, i saw some of your tweets about what was not said, what was said, what stands out? >> listen, the threat of russian interference is not only still a threat, it's happening right now. everybody has been briefed on the intelligence. you speak to folks on the hill and this would include the president. he knows this because his intelligence briefers would have let him know that there is evidence of not only continuing russian involvement in social media, divisive issues here in the u.s., but also probing attacks on actual voting syst s systems, which russia did in 2016 as well although it did not act on those attacks and interfere with the actual voting process in 2016, but it's continuing probing attacks on things like voter registration rolls, et cetera, to set up that possibility. that is the great concern of intelligence officials today. so for the president to stand there next to the russian president, who it is believed ordered not only interference in 2016 but continue

let's go to jim sciutto. jim, i have a lot to get to you, but ahead of all this other reporting you broke last night, what do you make of vladimir putin's response here? >> well, listen, so here we are, what are we a little more than a week after a meeting that even republicans, a meeting that the russian president in helsinki, that many republicans were alarmed about. president trump as you'll remember seeming to take putin's word over the word of u.s. intelligence agencies on election meddling, et cetera, which the president in a rare instance on his return seemed to correct some of the statements there, dialled them back. so that meeting with putin not seen as a success, but it was very soon after that the president appeared to double down on this personal relationship with the russian president, saying he had invited him to washington. then we learned, well, that might be pushed back to next year as opposed to this fall. then we learned that the russian president might not be coming at all. he raised quest

our chief national security correspondent jim sciutto is with us.et's start with the president demanding that other countries pay what he says would be their fair share and they pay it immediately. is the u.s. being treated unfairly? >> well, this battle within nato is not new. successive u.s. presidents have pushed european allies to pay more, to contribute more. and there is some basis to that argument. i'll give you an example. this is the number of military transport aircraft. that's a key of getting forces into place to fight wars, to counter threats. the u.s. has more than 5,000, 5,200 transport aircraft. all the other nato members combined have a little more than half that together. and it's this imbalance that successive u.s. presidents have tried to address. now if you look at the u.s. military budget, it pays 3.5%, a little more than that, of its budget. that's something of an unfair comparison because the u.s. has many military commitments far beyond nato, but when you look at that 2% goal, only a handful of countries meet that. greece, t

back with me jim sciutto and jack quinn. it is interesting of what they're saying to jack mueller, this case, julia, the southern district of new york. give me a distinction here. what's going on? >> we don't know michael cohen's strategy. >> i totally want to say of jim's reporting, what jim will never tell us as he should not is michael cohen is the source. we don't know that at this stage. if the reporting is accurate, what does it say? that says this is the first time and news organization has reported that someone in the room or close to the discussion of the june 9th meeting is willing to testify in some manner that donald trump knew about it before. he knew about it after and he lied about it. he's the one that air force one, drafting the faith press relief about the russians. he knows about it before. one has to assume that he knows the substance. >> can i pose this to you? this is from a legal mind. i think i can go to jack. >> this person says you have to remember, 90% of crime cases involved with key testimony. it

let's go to jim sciutto who joins us with more. status hearing but it's important because it comes in the context of the mueller team asking for a two-month delay to sentence him indicating what? >> interesting, the mueller team and flynn's lawyers asking for a delay here and that little walk we saw him do, we haven't seen flynn in that context since december when he pleaded guilty to making false statements to the fbi. now he's back. the judge in effect saying why haven't you sentenced this guy yet? what's happening here and reading between the lines it appears what has been happening is that michael flynn has been talking to mueller about his russia investigation. he agreed to cooperate with that investigation and it sounds like the special counsel wants to keep that line of communication as it were open. now the judge is a bill clinton appointee. he traditionally has had some september schism about prosecutors and how far they go so he's been saying put up or shut up, he's pled guilty to a crime. the special counsel wants to kee

we know from jim sciutto's reporting that when cohen testified behind closed doors in front of the housentelligence committee, he did not say as much. we don't know if he said it to the senate intel committee. we know at least to the house, he didn't say as much. to the issue of credibility and who you believe this morning, you know, who will mueller's team believe, who will the american people believe, the president or michael cohen? >> no one in this story has a great deal of credibility, i'm afraid. i do think in fairness to the president, if mr. cohen has information which he can corroborate, come forward, then his credibility will go up and the president will be there hot wat water, as will his son who has testified to congress that the president didn't know anything about it. if that testimony was false, co-cohe can be prosecuted over that. the president's son is deeply involved in this, too. cohen doesn't -- keep changes his story. rudy giuliani had a good point. he is known to be a chronic liar. it's also true that the trump administration -- the trump people themselves have lied

let's bring in our chief national security correspondent, jim sciutto. jim, you've been speaking with diplomats from nato member countries. what are they telling you? >> reporter: frankly, wolf, they're telling me they're concerned. you see this coming out in some of the public comments from european leaders there. the president being challenged directly to his face by the nato chief, by the french president, by the german chancellor. in private, those comments, those concerns, even more severe. one particular concern is this. they will get in private assurances from senior u.s. officials, military officials, secretary of defense mattis, for instance. assurances that the u.s. remains committed to all of its commitments in europe. the trouble is that those assurances are often contradicted by the president's public comments. and their concern is that while there's been that dissonance for a year-and-a-half now under the president's administration, that those assurances that they hear from those senior national security officials mean less over time. they'r
