i'm jim sciutto. st. >> and i'm poppy harlow. >> new information and growing questions on the origins of the covid-19 pandemic. cnn has learned that a u.s. intelligence report found that several researchers at china's wuhan institute of virology fell ill, got seriously sick in november 2019. so sick they had to be hospitalized. the big take away here, they were hospitalized. it goes a lot further than what we knew before. chinese researchers had gotten sick in the autumn of 2019. a whole month before china reported the first case of covid-19. >> this new intelligence that wuhan researchers were sick enough to seek hospital care shortly before the confirmed outbreak more broadly is now fueling a debate within the scientific community. whether the virus has a natural origin, remember the stories about the wet market there in wuhan or the result of an accidental leak from a chinese laboratory. joining us now is cnn's kylie atwood. at the statement, david culver as well. let's begin with your reporting here. do they have more confidence now in this intelligence this evidence and, therefor

joining us is cnn's jim sciutto and in moscow, we have cnn's matthew chance. jim, what is the latest here? >> listen, a couple of big points here. one, after all these years and through multiple administrations, the u.s. has not figured out how to protect itself from these hacks of the u.s. government, major u.s. agencies and also hasn't figured out how to deter russia from carrying them out. they have tried sanctions on individuals and entities, strong cooperation with allies and russia is still carrying out the attacks. you know, they are flailing, right, in terms of what to do that makes a difference here. the second point which -- what is unique and particularly alarming about this attack is that russia was looking for information about critics of this administration. human rights groups, et cetera that the u.s. is in contact with and we've seen how russia handles its critics, right? they try to poison alexei navalny. sent him to a prison camp. this belerusian case. and it's a significant vulnerability for the people targeted. >> john berman has been callin

i'm jim sciutto. as cases drop across the country, so, too, are mask requirements. right now weekly covid deaths are the lowest they have been in 14 months. that's great news. but much confusion remains about how states plan to enforce mask wearing for unvaccinated americans. it's vaccinated americans who should be able to take their masks off. next hour we'll hear from the white house covid response team for the first time since the cdc issued its new mask guidance. this as more cities and companies announce changes to their policies with some doing away entirely with mask requirements. >> both cvs and target said monday they'll no longer fully require -- will no longer require fully vaccinated shoppers to wear masks unless mandated by local leaders. but some states and local leaders, not moving as quickly. new jersey eliminated its mask requirement outdoors but kept it in place for indoor public spaces. california also plans to keep its mask mandate for indoor activities in place for a month. so far

let's get an update from our jim sciutto and david culver. jim, the u.s.e they getting closer to know where and when their track is. >> reporter: of course the problem with that is land is not the sea where would not be in danger potentially in populated areas. that's the issue here. china made a mistake here in effect from the view of the u.s. it sent a large rocket stage in orbit typically these are mortgage state rockets. they typically fall into earth before getting into orbit. this one went into orbit which means it has to come back to the earth's atmosphere and if it is big enough, and this one is, it is the size of a school bus. same thing happened last year with the chinese rocket, they'll be watching it closely in the next 24 hours. >> so what is the chinese government saying about all these statements? >> pamela, it is interesting to hear jim describes it there. they are proud of these rockets when they are launching. they have been rather quiet. one exception comes in on friday, the chance of doing this any harm or damage is extr extremely low.
