jim sciutto, great to have you. thank you for being with us. >> thanks. >> now to cnn's phil black who is in the capital kyiv. and, phil, we're getting these reports of a new mass grave in mariupol, and what the ukrainians in mariupol are being asked to do there. what have you learned? >> reporter: yeah, john so this is information that has come from the mayor of mariupol, someone not in that devastated city, but throughout the war acted as a conduit for information that is coming from beyond the siege that has kept everyone else out and, of course, the population in. he says partly as a result of analysis of commercial satellite imagery that they have identified a third mass grave on the outskirts of the city. there were two others recently, this would be a third. this, he says, is as a result of images which show large trenches that have been dug and made larger as they have been filled in over time. now, if this is true, it adds to, well, the growing picture of extraordinary human suffering and loss of life. as a

let's go live to lviv, ukraine, and bring in cnn's jim sciutto with the very latest this morning. jim? >> reporter: brianna, i think it's interesting to hear the words of the adviser to president zelenskyy about this now series of accidents, if you want to call them that, inside russian territory because ukrainian officials have been cagey to date in terms of acknowledging any possible connection to these things. we've seen burning refineries, weapons depots, but to hear those words from that adviser today to say that debts have to be repaid is almost saying out loud that these were ukrainian operations on russian territory, which would be an extension of the war. he went on to say that russia in effect deserves to be demilitarized which is sort of borrowing what has been russia's description of its operations here in ukraine, to demilitarize ukraine, ukraine pushing back perhaps with a little pride in defiance to say if you are going to try to do that to us we're going to do the same to you. and that's notable. that's notable. this would show a significant capability for ukrainian

jim sciutto is back on the ground in lviv. this is your reporting.us from federation on the side of the russian military there, what more are you learning? >> well, couple of headlines here, the first being that it is early in this new russian offensive and concentration of its forces in the east. and so far the u.s. has not observed big territorial gains by the russians. really any territorial gains, the battlefield remaining static as it has been described to me by one official, what the u.s. has observed, what may be probing attacks by russian forces on ukrainian defenses. but they are watching that battlefield very closely. the other headline is that we're get something details about what the focus of this latest u.s. weapons package to ukraine will be, remember, there was $800 million last week, a lot of heavy weapons, another $800 million planned this week, with a focus on artillery. that includes u.s. made artillery, particularly the 155 millimeter howitzers going in as well as ammunition, and the u.s., to get enough into those ukrainian force

cnn's jim sciutto has details. >> reporter: as russia's attack on the east intensify, there is new evidence that some of its own soldiers have had enough. the security service of ukraine releasing purported new intercepted communications among russian soldiers. one man recounting a conversation he had with his commander. he can be heard saying "we asked the commander, quote, what should we do? we got nothing." he said the commander told him, effing shoot all the civilians to the end and then warned the troops, quote, whoever leaves their post will be a deserter. that's when another soldier on the recording can be heard saying "tell them to f off." as the conversation continues the soldier then complaining that russia has all been abandoned now, saying, "just imagine they didn't provide a way to retreat, didn't say anything, didn't even bring food. f them." cnn cannot vouch for the authenticity of the recording, but ukraine has previously released audio of russian soldiers and russian troops have used unsecured lines of communication according to military observers. as the war enters its 56t
