let's bring in cnn anchor and chief national security correspondent jim sciutto and cnn national security analyst steve hall, former cia chief of russia operations. jim, let me start with you. we heard from ned price, the spokesman at the state department today, he told nbc news that this russian jet appeared to be careening and potentially out of control and he actually said that the assessment was that this was unintentional. i heard that from him, but not administration-wide. what are your sources saying? is there a consensus around that? >> doesn't seem to be a hard consensus here. it's possible two things are true, that it was flying particularly close, which you will often see russian jets do with u.s. surveillance aircraft or chinese jets do with u.s. surveillance aircraft in east asia, fly close, that's intentional to show that they're watching and perhaps eject a little bravado from the pilots there which you'll often see. it's possible that the collision wasn't intentional, but that that happened while the pilot was operating that way. i think big picture one thing to be concern

let's bring in now our chief anchor and national security correspondent jim sciutto. good morning to you. how significant is this u.s. drone take down? what are u.s. drones doing in the black sea region? >> to the first question, we're a year in the biggest war in europe since world war ii with russia on one side, of course, invaded ukraine. the u.s. backing the other side. taking great pains to make sure that the u.s. and russian forces don't come in direct conflict. yesterday they did over the black sea here. a u.s. drone. but you have a russian plane circling it, dumping fuel on it, eventually taking that u.s. aircraft down. that is the second time in a month, keep in mind, six, seven weeks or so, where one superpower has taken down another superpower's aircraft. you had the u.s. shooting down a chinese surveillance balloon after travelled over the u.s. and now russia taking down a u.s. surveillance aircraft. this is the world we're living in right now. and it's very dangerous. >> yeah. it is very dangerous. it raises a lot of questions also about the surveillance

cnn's chief national security correspondent , jim sciutto, jim. good morning to you this news coming overnight and all of your years. i know there's the last time this happened was 1986 as we have been discussing, but that this is quite rare, but quite serious. well, first, we should take any russian claims or accusations here with enormous skepticism and doubt right? it may have been many years since the journalist has been arrested on these charges. but we've had other americans we have paul whelan, a former marine accused of spying as well. and of course , brittney griner case, you know, a case where russia greatly trumped up their accusations of drug trafficking writer but before she was released, so russia's track record on this inspires zero little to zero confidence. and russia does, we know have a habit of taking americans and other foreign nationals in effect as hostages right that hostages to be used as collateral for exchanges for russians held in the u. s or other countries, so we have to be conscious of the track record. conscious of

i'm jim sciutto. sad news to report this morning. right now. we are waiting for the release of police body camera video taken, his officers confronted a shooter who killed six people, including three children at a private christian school in nashville. three of those victims just nine years old. one of them halle scruggs. you can see a picture there from 2019. just a little girl, the daughter of the bleed pastor at covenant presbyterian church. church affiliated with the school. the other two children have been identified. evelyn dick aus, william kenny. among the adult victims 61 year old cynthia peak. the other two were school employees. 60 year old catherine kunz, head of school mike hill. he worked as ext odeon. all of them lost their lives yesterday . since the shooting memorial outside the school has been growing. something we've seen so many times this morning. it's been adorned with balloons, stuffed animals. across as well decorated with flowers. the school has released a statement saying, in part, our community is heartbroken. we are
