>> jim vance. >> including my daughter. >> yeah. you were -- >> i was shy. >> jim, thanks for sharing. >> always good reminiscing. >> we'll talk more later. >>> our other top story tonight is about two howard university students. they were shot in a daring home invasion that happened in broad daylight in northwest d.c. and that is where pat collins is tonight to tell us how this all went down. >> reporter: wendy, this is still very much an active crime scene. why was this house targeted? did the suspects know the victims? what were they looking for here? questions that police are trying to answer tonight. ambulances, cops, evidence techs, a flurry of activity at this home on north capital and bryant streets northwest. two people shot inside the house during a home invasion. a man struck in the knee. a woman shot in the foot. police say both victims are students at howard university. chelsea griffith knows the people in the house. she was supposed to meet one of them here this afternoon. >> reporter: how many people live in the house?

i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. is on the scene with more on the innocent bystander caught in the middle of that shooting. jackie? >> doreen, this was an awful situation. people were coming home from work, teenagers were coming home from high school when gun fire broke out at the front of the station. >> we heard pop, pop, pop about four or five shots and i knew it was gunshots and there was a young kid about 14 behind me. i grabbed him and we ran over behind the booth where the metro workers were. we hid behind there. there were a couple more shots and then somebody yelled it was okay. we went out and the boy was bleeding. there was blood everywhere. it was awful. >> reporter: a 16-year-old young man was struck several times. he was taken to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. an 18-year-old woman coming home from work was grazed in the leg as the stray bullet tore across her skirt. the city of rockville, montgomery county, and metro transit police officers fanned out in an intense search for the suspe

jim vance joins us with more on chuck brown's legacy and life. what an icon here. >> one of a kind.died this afternoon at john hopkins hospital in baltimore. he had been in the hospital for several weeks with pneumonia. in fact for the past couple months. chuck's musical career lasted 50 years. he got a start here in d.c. in the 60s and played the guitar for a latin band. by the 70s he had already created the go-go sound. the musical genre that grew to define him and the city. in 1978 chuck brown broke out, busted out if you will with his first number one hit busting loose. then in 2010 he was nominated for his first grammy award. chuck brown was 75 years old. been talking to a couple people who knew chuck over the years. one was a guy named carl hinson used to call

i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. a federal judge sentenced harry thomas jr. to 38 months in prison today. he stole more than $350,000 from city taxpayers, money that was supposed to go to youth sports programs. tom sherwoods at the d.c. courthouse with new reaction tonight. >> reporter: the judge said thomas betrayed the city and that he said requires significant time in prison. harry thomas jr. rushed past reporters into federal court to be sentenced for his theft of more than $350,000 in city funds and filing false income taxes for three years. prosecutors had sought a 46-month term. thomas had asked for 18 months. the judge said 38 months. >> i think today's sentence sent an important message that public corruption will not be tolerated in our city. harry thomas will now serve more than three years in prison. >> reporter: but first thomas's mother, a prominent political figure in her own right told judge john bates i humbly and passionately plead for mercy for my son. thomas himself said what is wrong? i broke the law. i humiliated my family. i humiliated

i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. we begin with the desperate search for answers in the death of a woman who was shot and killed by a culpepper, virginia police officer. a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against that officer tonight. back in february patricia cook was shot several times at a school parking lot. the officer claimed she tried to hit him but as julie carey reports, some witness accounts just don't add up. >> if there was ever a case of what would appear to be excessive force this would seem to be it. >> that's how this attorney describes what happened to 54-year-old patricia cook. it's been three months since she was shot to death during a confrontation with the culpepper police officer as she sat unarmed in her jeep in a church parking lot. a special investigative grand jury is in the process of sorting through the conflicting reports to determine whether the shooting was justified or whether the officer should be criminally charged. but attorneys representing cook's widower gary say they are tire

i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. we begin with the developing story in the district where federal prosecutors today charged a former campaign official for mayor vincent gray. an assistant treasurer with the 2010 mayoral campaign is now charged with making illegal campaign donations and felony destruction of evidence. tom sherwood has details. >> reporter: for more than a year federal authorities have been investigating gray's campaign finances and allegations of a shadow campaign of fake documents and unreported spending. it began in march, 2011, with allegations by former minor candidate sewell mon brown that he was paid by gray operatives to attack then mayor finty on the campaign trail in 2010. now in the first public action the u.s. attorney's office is charging that gray assistant treasurer thomas gore made at least three straw donations to an unnamed candidate for mayor and used fake names on the donations. sources say the candidate who got the fake donations was suleman brown. more seriously u.s. attorney rona
