the effort against it, the main point made on the floor of the senate came from senator jim webb. his point was we have never, ever designated part of a legitimate government, a state when i say legitimate, it doesn't mean we agree with iran, it is a member of the united nations. almost all of our allies have embassies in iran. that is why i note an elected legitimate government whether we agree or not. we have never made any part of illegitimate independent government, designated them or made them part of a terrorist organization. we've just never done that. and you say so what, what is the problem? the problem was at least 22 of us believe, both republicans and democrats, but it was jim webb who was on the floor most of the time, said if you do that, it's tantamount to giving the president of the united states authority to use military force against iran without having to come back to get a resolution from or partner with or cooperate with the congress of the united states. essentially, if we vote for that, we're giving the president that authority. you can agree or disagree wit

the objective was not to get jim webb or chuck hagel any credit. the inductive was to do something for the country, -- the objective was to do something for the country on the do something for the people. this kind of attention, this kind of recognition -- much of my life has been about doing everything i can in some way to help veterans and their families, whether it was a program or whatever it was. i'm proud of that. i'm more proud of that than anything else i have been involved in. i'm proud of my background and my career, like all of you are. nothing makes me prouder or has ever made me prouder. to each of you in this room, as of you who are watching this around the world, i say to you, thank you. thank you to you for your service and sacrifices. i will do everything i can. i look forward to working with you. you will always know that you have a secretary of defense that will be straight with you. i will be honest and direct. i will expect the same from you. i will never ask anyone to do anything i would not do. i will not ask anyone to do mor

jim webb was a perfect example -- the senator from virginia. he said, all these think tank commandos in this town, let's go in and get tough -- you do not send force. you send young men and women who have lives and families and hopes and dreams, and you had better think twice, three times, if we will send them in. so i do feel -- the obligatory line for every politician, democrat, republican, is how much we admire the people in the military, the great job they do. i just ask, when was the last time a president of the united states went to a funeral for anybody who came back in a pine box? i cannot find one. one of the reasons is, they do not know anybody in the military. the sons of the cabinet officers or the ceo's or network correspondence or columnist -- when we were debating going to war in iraq, my sister and i called all 535 offices on capitol hill. we asked just one question -- does the senator or member of congress have a child in the enlisted ranks of the united states military? three out of four of the casualties come from the enliste
