omar jimenez is in los angeles. dan simon is in the north. what are you seeing right now? >> reporter: we're along the 405 in los angeles and the entire hillside at one point was on fire. now it is a smoldering hillside because winds have been moving further back into this hillside right here. it's moved over the top of what we're seeing here and a helicopter just went into the clouds or the smoke behind there as they've been dropping in water and -- you know what, here, our photographer is going to come up. see this helicopter coming out of the smoke here. they've been dropping fire retardant over the course of this morning, coming in with round after round, trying to make sure that these flames don't creep onto the many cars you see driving along the 405. the road has not closed over the course of this. one of the big fears is the winds, the windy conditions we have seen over the course of the past few days that some of these embers could spread even as far as miles and start fires in places there weren't fires to begin with. >> omar, thank you. stick with me. dan, how a

cnn's omar jimenez is live in los angeles with a live look at the situation.her morning of findighting the gett fire, but there is still plenty of work to be done. this is in a brentwood neighborhood in the los angeles area, and one of the things that they are focusing on right now is structure protection in evacuation zones like the one we're in right now. throughout the course of this morning, you may be able to hear at some points, we've seen helicopters come through and dropping water on some of the hillsides even though it is dark out, they've been trying to, again, make sure this fire doesn't get ahead of them in any way on that front. overall, they have been making pretty good progress. we've heard from the fire department that says they've really done a good job of slowing the speed of how this fire has spread. it's only about 5% contained, and there are still many people in mandatory evacuation zones waking up this morning and one thing that we are going to be looking for moving forward is that crews are going to try and take advantage of today. by th

cnn's omar jimenez is live with more. omar. >> reporter: erica, already a red flag warning means wind and humidity conditions are ripe for a fire. so an extreme red flag warning indicates that the thread for fire conditions is at a level that no one has seen in recent memory here in the los angeles area. primary here in l.a., we've been dealing with the getty fire that exposed in early morning hours on monday. we learned from investigators that it was an accidental start to the fire. meaning a branch from a tree flew off in high wind conditions and slammed into a power line. and that's what's sparked the blaze that's burned 650 acres and destroyed 12 homes. ahead of potential new fires, so cal edison fire has said potentially they will shut off power for 300,000 people in this. it comes and as they now acknowledge may have been involved in last year's woolsey fire last year in southern california that destroyed more than 300 structures and killed three people. in this fire in particular, 700 fire personnel are responding

cnn's omar jimenez is there. >> reporter: a lot of pain in this community over how what should have beenare check ended with 28-year-old atatiana jefferson shot and killed in her own bedroom as her 8-year-old nephew looked on. a concerned neighbor was concerned because he saw the door to jefferson's home open past 2:00 in the morning. police say that they parked near but not in front of the home and body camera footage that the department released shows the officers making their way through the dark property with flashlights. then one of the officers approaches one of the windows, really quickly, gun drawn yells put your hands up. and then literally within seconds fires a single fatal shot through that window leaving jefferson dead. again, in front of her 8-year-old nephew. now, police say that officer fired the weapon because he quote was perceiving a threat. the investigation continues. the family's attorney is calling for an independent investigation saying the police department shouldn't be trusted to investigate one of their own. as for the neighbor that made that initial call, he p

joining us now on the phone is cnn's omar jimenez live in los angeles with more. what's the situation around you, omar? auto. >> yeah, john and alisyn, we're making our way to the scene right now. this is a brush be fire that broke out in the overnight hours that really just ballooned very, very quickly. we heard from the los angeles fire department literally a few minutes ago who told us about 33 homes are now being evacuated in that area alone. as you mentioned it's along the 405 freeway near the getty center here in los angeles and one of the reasons this is so concerning is that, one, southern california had already been dealing with another wildfire, the cook fire, burning over the course of the past few days, but also that there's not any -- nature isn't doing these fires any favors as far as getting put out. we saw 70 to 80-mile-per-hour winds over the course of yesterday in this area which as you know can spread these embers and start fires miles away from where they were burning in the first place and we're expecting some of the winds to continue into tod

omar jimenez is live with all the breaking details. some of these pictures just remarkable. >> john, this is exactly what officials were fearing and why they put out an extreme red flag warning for the first time ever this week. homes completely engulfed in flames in san bernardino. this is a fire that broke out early this morning here in california. at this point, people are still waking up. and for those that are in what is now a mandatory evacuation area in that san bernardino area were woken up essentially in the middle of the night, just close to 4:00 in the morning here pacific time and were in some cases scrambling for their lives at points. look no further than those flames to see how dangerous these situations become. you may be able to hear the wind blowing across my microphone right now. this was some of the strongest winds our crews have felt as we stepped outside in the early morning hours. and we know yesterday, just north of where we are here in the southern california area, we got wind gusts of 74 miles per hour. those

omar jimenez is live with the latest. >> reporter: it was a tense ft. worth city council meeting.testers chanting, we don't feel safe. others standing at the mic calling for officials to be fired. on the policy side, the mayor was there along with other city council members as well. one of the things they put forward was the mayor was calling for a third party investigation to look into the policies and procedures at the ft. worth police department. it's part of what atatiana jefferson's family has been calling for from the beginning saying the police cannot be trusted to investigate themselves. now, police spoke on that partly during a press conference yesterday. they also touched on morale throughout the police department. that's when the interim chief got emotional before abruptly ending the press conference. this is how it ended. >> it's very emotional because the officers, they try hard every day to try to make this city better. i likened it yesterday to some of our officers that are out there every weekend and most weeknights. that they're out there trying to build these rel
