jimmy carter was the only one who reached that kind of stature during his lifetime. st: we have heard from his son, we have heard from his grandson, jason carter, giving eulogies and remarks during this state funeral which began on january 4 in georgia and continues today here in washington. news week reported that a little over a year after rose lynn carter passed away, that's when jimmy carter 356d away, the two were married for 77 years. the longest marriage in presidential history. he was quoted as saying the best thing i ever did was marrying rosalynn jimmy said during an interview at the carter center in 2015. that's the pinnacle of my life. he told his grandson in his final days, according to newsweek, i want to see rosalynn. speak about their love affair and their partnership. guest: it was all of that. he had met her when he was at the naval academy. she was a friend of his sister's in plains, georgia. they got married at a young age. when he was doing the nuclear engineer responsibility for the navy, they moved to new york. and then with when his father died

joe biden, again, as you mentioned, as a freshman senator, took a risk somewhat endorsing jimmy carter. >> but he said his gut told him that carter had the right vision to be president. >> and, of course, that was a good bet for joe biden. when jimmy carter won the presidency in 1976. but again, in the years that passed, their relationship became much more personal. president biden, the day that jimmy carter died, spoke about the fact that the carters, both jimmy and rosalynn, helped console the bidens when, uh, when beau biden died of breast cancer, and then when jimmy carter dealt with, i mean, brain cancer, of course. and when jimmy carter had his cancer diagnosis, the bidens also returned that favor. and and so it's become a friendship, a almost, um, a family that they've, uh, kind of formed over the years, over the decades, quite honestly. and i'm sure president biden, he hasn't talked as much about that recently, but i'm sure there's a lot he's going to learn and take from jimmy carter about what graceful post-presidency can look like. >> and of course, we'll hear some of those p

he did not have that kind of relationship with jimmy carter. they both won nobel prizes. nobel prize, so did al gore. they're in that exclusive club. jimmy ford was another serious pal. one could say they were just making nice. no. they really loved each other. they vacationed together, traveled together, talked to each other all the time. if you go through the papers of 1979, '80, '81, you'll see the friendship through correspondence, they were united in program after program after program. i asked president carter once about that, and i compared it to how jefferson, thomas jefferson and john adams were pitted against each other, but at the end of their lives they wrote each other with the correspondence. he said, well, we don't write like jefferson and adams do, but we're doing what we can to help people in need and show the bipartisan spirit of america. and last thing, it is a day of national mourning, and i am positive that if jimmy carter was alive today, he'd be thinking how can we end up helping the people of the palisades fire going on. he would not be blind to the

and that was jimmy carter. south, and he embraced both sides. he was a minority in sumter county, just about 20, 25% of the population was white. but growing up as a minority, he became the friend of the majority. and when he went to the naval academy, he asked that his roommate be the first black midshipman to come to annapolis. and he said, i know minorities. i've been a minority most of my life, and maybe i can help him in his adjustments. and he went out of his way to embrace those of us who had grown up in all kinds of conflict. but that was the sensitivity, the spirituality, that made james earl carter a truly great president. james earl carter was truly a child of god. not only a good farmer, but a nuclear physicist, chosen by admiral rick over, to assist him in developing a nuclear navy. but at the same time he was working on a nuclear navy, he was thinking of peace on earth and good will toward all men, and especially women and children. i've known president carter for more than half of my life. and i

that's jimmy carter's third son. he had three sons and amy who came along 13 years after jeff, and the other two sons are jack carter and chip carter. the entire family, the grandchildren, a close family, took family vacations together where jimmy carter would insist that everybody be prompt and when the bus left, it left. if you didn't catch it, you were left behind. there was only one person who got an exemption from that and that was rosalyn carter, and he was a woodworker and made her a plaque that entitled her to be late. she said it was the best present she ever received. but you also have -- you can see in the -- in the crowd there, in addition to family members, there's some people from the carter center, the chair of the board of the carter center is jason carter, jimmy's grandson, who is a peace corps veteran and former candidate for governor of georgia. very impressive heir to carter's responsibilities at the carter center. and i think the other thing to keep in mind about the carter's circle, when jimmy an

host: president biden said jimmy carter was a model of post-presidency. what did you make of it? he was. in some ways he was a model for a new type of post president. prior to carter, most former presidents went home, relatively quiet. they didn't participate in politics. they also didn't have a lot of public presence. carter was young. he wanted something to do. he created the carter center. now most presidents have centers that are not just affiliated with their libraries but also have a philanthropic element. they usually have missions, whether democracy, medicine, health, human rights. carter did all those. he carved a new path for what was possible for former presidents to consider with their time, influence and power. host: his grandson in his eulogy marking, noting the presidential carter center has 3500 employees, 100 and america and the rest across the world. guest: incredible. carter was clearly focused on global affairs. that was true during his presidency. some of his biggest contributions are with foreign policy. i attribute that to his time in the navy. he lived all
