it sent out a distress signal about 20 kilometers off jindo island. it was carrying more than 450 people. more than 300 were high school students from near seoul. coast guard officials sent helicopters and ships for the rescue operation. they say they've recovered three bodies. a male student, and a female crew member are among them. one male has not yet been identified. the toll of the missing was revised upward dramatically after confusion in the wake of the accident. authorities say military personnel and special rescue teams including 160 divers are now in the area to search for the missing. >> translator: an announcement said we should stay where we were. but the ship was already sinking. many students could not get out. >> staff at a meteorological observatory on jindo island say there was fog at the time of the accident. the ferry operator says due to the fog the vessel left port three hours behind schedule. >>> we now have a live report from seoul. nhk world's anna jung is at the government's central disaster relief center. anna, can you tell

> well many of the relatives of those missing have been visiting the scene of the accident off jindo islandr correspondent has been to see the search operation and sent us this report. >> reporter: we should be able to see the two boats that marks the exact spot where the ferry sunk. divers and boats are going down in the waters to try and recover the bodies from the sunken vessel. as they move into the ship, it becomes hard. the task becomes tougher. being out here, you get some idea of the scale of this operation. there's dozens of vessels force of divers. there's also a huge crane. at some stage that will be brought in to the site to lift up the vessel. officials say for now that won't happen. they're trying to pull the bodies out of the ferry. it's a difficult and dangerous task. for that reason, the rescue, massive recovery operation will last several more days. >> let's work out how that recovery operation is going. we can speak to joseph kim, a journalist in contact with authorities as well as families of ferry passengers themselves. joseph, thanks for joining us. can you give us a p

these men were part of a group of 17 school friends heading to jindo island for their 60th birthday. four are still missing. they say they owe their lives to park. he describes how the ship listed so much, the wall became the floor. an open door made the gap between them and the exit too great to step on the floor, he says, hanging onto microphone telling passengers not to move. park took the keys from him, forced her way to the door, closed it, and locked it to keep it shut so that passengers could walk across. she was right next to the exit, he says. she could easily have escaped. that door saved so many lives. it was like the bridge of life. i ask how many lives. they estimate around 50 escaped through that exit. that's nearly 1/3 of allpa madee helped by just onejust one woma. she was just a girl but she was so brave. if every crew member on that boat was as brave as she was, the disaster would not have been this bad. among the first to be rescued, kim says the captain and other crew members were already dry land by the time he got there. while the captain ran awaway to save his
