let's get right to msnbc business correspondent jo ling kent. jo, break down the numbers for us again. what do they mean big picture wise? >> reporter: hey eamon, good morning. the 1.5 million claims filed last week, what you need to know about that number is it continues to decline and that drop has happened now for ten straight weeks. there's a little bit of a silver lining here. i always like to look at the continuing claims number from the labor department, and that number is about 21 million so that means people who are continuing to collect unemployment, that number is also down pretty significantly, down by about 300,000. so the good news is things are starting to turn around, as people go back to work, but we have to put this 1.5 million number in context. this really still is a massive deeply damaging number which economists say means the recovery will take long per. not just weeks, not just months, it's probably going to be years and some of the evidence of that eamon is in the retail sector. corsai research is saying that 25,000 retai
