my colleague jo ling kent is there. so, jo, of all the releases of all the announcements, what stood out to you from the event? >> it seems like apple is trying to throw a mary pass with the -- a hail mary pass with the new ipad pro. this is what analysts are saying about it. this is something may change the game. sales tanked for ipad over last year. growth overall in the category, deirdre, not really expected to improve. so the stylus, the apple pencil something a lot of analysts like. new keyboard that goes along with the ipad pro. we saw the new independednt phone. major improvements on that front with the forced touch and improved camera. there was a lot here in cupertino to set people up for the holiday season but the real question is what is the competition thinking now? what is samsung thinking? and new strategy for xiaomi and huawei? there is lot of competition out there. apple moving step forward innovating to try to capture the hearts of all the smartphone users out there, deirdre. deirdre: jo ling, thank you

really within the last two years, jo ling. you start to say to yourself, what more can be done, should be done and why aren't they doing it? >> let's be careful here too. the government isn't responsible for defending private companies. private companies who have been hacked are responsible for their own cybersecurity. so very much a joint effort to have the support of u.s. government and capabilities there. trish: doesn't it have to come from the top? isn't there a message, sean, that washington should be sending, you know what? , you don't necessary with us? you don't mess with our corporations? you don't hack into our materials, if you do you will pay the price? seems as though nobody really told them you can't? >> well, i think, it is time for government to do something, right? i think it is overdue but this is living breathing thing. we just, two years ago, started to do cause a problem. but, i think if the government did decide to start putting sanctions on companies that go into this be a activity, it would probably cur

we have gordon chang, jo ling kent. gordon, start with you. theft from a 2013 study, intellectual property is, the u.s. is actually losing out on $300 billion worth of intellectual property as a result of countries like china. half of this is thought to come from china. and yet, we want to do more business with them. >> yeah. this is really ironic because here you have the country that is attacking these tech companies, that's china, appealing to the victims, not to seek help from the only party that can protect them which is washington. but clearly, these companies do see that there is business opportunity in china, but i think this is one problem that goes away very quickly because chinese economy is reeling. essentially, chinese president xi jinping can not change the direction of his economy. we've seen this before. trish: he says he can do it. he is out there moments ago speaking in seattle. i read you those headlines. he is saying he is not that concerned about the macroeconomic fundamentals. that they can fix it. let's not forget, they,

jo ling kent is here with an update. this sounds pretty scary. >> yeah.s happened on this very safe apple ecosystem. some of the most popular chinese apps available in apple's app store were infected with malicious software. palo alto networks detected the breach and say more than three dozen apps have been affected including the version of uber in china and a messaging app used by 500 million people. the malware was specifically targeted at apple's ios mobile operating system. software developers mistakenly used a bad version of a tool kit containing malware that makes the app. it then could send out fake alerts that would allow criminals and spies to steal icloud passwords. apple told "the wall street journal" it removed the app and is now working with software engineers to make sure they're using the official tool kits. the apps also reported no personal information was actually stolen. by the way, the company that discovered this breach, that stock is up 17 so far this year, palo alto networks, and all of this is unfolding on the eve of xi jinping's s
