joan biskupic is our cnn legal analyst and supreme court biographer. justice jackson's first few months. >> yes, that was down 36 steps of the supreme court. it was quite a morning of pageantry and history, but now the real action starts. during the last couple of months, she has been reading cases, preparing for the arguments this monday, trying to get up to speed. navigating this building that she's new to. and trying to figure out how will she work with our eight cleels. and what's interesting about this moment, allison, not only is she trying to be ready to perform the duties as an associate justice, but she also faces this unusual time of public distrust of the court. we've seen poll after poll this summer in the wake of the ruling that rolled back nearly a half insure of abortion rights, where the public is expressing so much more scrutiny of the supreme court and the justices themselves are arguing about their own legitimacy. some justices raising questions about just whether the court is acting like a court. that is coming from the liberal diss

joan biskupic.eferencing. >> 2020, one justice died. another justice came on. we got the end of roe v. wade completely. and only because of that change in justices. there was elena kagan tonight in new york reporting what she said earlier this summer about how when the justices suddenly switch gears on the law because of a change of personnel, what does that do to public confidence in the court and to the court's legitimacy. >> and it's coming of course after you have a political process by how you have a supreme court confirmed. that's a very political-feeling thing. there's already mistrust issues. this adds to the idea of what's it all about. >> completely does. and this is -- this is her thing. but get this, laura, they disagree not just on cases, but they disagree on why people are questioning the court's legitimacy. just last weekend in colorado springs, the chief justice said, people shouldn't question the legitimacy of the court. it's just that they're disagreeing with the rulings. he's sort

joining us now is cnn legal analyst joan biskupic. nvestigation, joan, has been under way since may when we saw this leak? >> yes, since the first weekend in may when they learned that politico had a copy of the draft opinion and so far no culprit has been caught as far as we know and justice elena kagan suggested that no one had been caught and that they will be getting some modest status report at the end of the month. it was interesting to hear her, a liberal, talk about how horrible the leak was. because as you know, a lot of conservatives presumed that it was probably a liberal against the opinion who might have leaked it. but surely that leak served the conservative side because it locked in votes. the other thing she talked about there was the legitimacy or lack of legitimacy of the supreme court, you know, since the ruling striking down nearly a half century of abortion rights and many other politically charged decisions. there has been a real stain on the image of the judiciary as an impartial branch of government. and she sai
