as a great american city goes wild. >>> coming up, much-talked about people magazine coverage, joan lunden in a week of appearances on "today" show. opening up about her fight as we begin breast cancer awareness month. tonight, hoda kotb, a fellow breast cancer survivor, brings her conversation with joan to us starting with the moment she received her diagnosis. >> how did you get the news? >> the doctor, the radiologist, she walked in, and as soon as she walked in i knew by her demeanor. >> you did? >> i knew by her demeanor. she just wasn't even looking at me. and she sat down and she said you have breast cancer. as i understand it, 250,000 women in this country had breast cancer last year. and a lot of them are going through chemo. and they're losing their hair. and they might not say it because, i'll be honest with you, i've never really voiced this with my husband, but you feel less like a woman. you feel less feminine. you feel less beautiful. you feel kind of embarrassed. you feel kind of like the ugly duckling. >> joan had aggressive stage 2 triple negative breast cancer. she chose

joan lunden. in june she was diagnosed with breast cancer.e cover appearing bald. so inspired so many to lose their wigs. this morning she talked about her decision. >> at first, i kept going back and forth. i have children who are 9 and 11 and were they going to be embarrassed? were they going to have someone say, gee, is your mommy dying? and i kind of talked myself out of it. i need to be the lioness. the mommy first. wait a second, this would be out of character for joan lunden not to do this. my children came and got on the bed and i said i have a decision to make. it is a national magazine which means everyone will see it. and you guys haven't even seen me with no hair. they haven't seen me bald. >> how come? >> i don't run around the house that way. i guess it says i'm afraid it will shock them or make them -- i don't want them to worry that i'm going on die. i'm beating this. we're doing this. we're losing our hair in order to live and survive and be there for our families and our husbands and our kids. that's a whole different ball o

we've been very proud to have joan lunden as our special correspondent.ay morning. this time with a little twist. to answer your questions. carson is in the orange room, along with radiologist dr. susan drostman to help us out as well. joan, welcome back. >> thank you. good to be here. >> are you ready for this? we've got a lot of questions. >> oh, my gosh. >> we've been inundated with people asking questions. a lot of people asked this same question. elizabeth from facebook asked you mentioned you had a normal mammogram and the problem developed in an ultrasound. why did you have the ultrasound? should i ask my doctor to do this as a follow-up? >> this is the resounding question. because i had the new 3-d mammogram, which they are great if you have what's called fatty tissue in your breast. but if you have dense fieb fiberous tissue, you need an ultrasound. >> we have a radiologist in the orange room. >> she's great. if it's more than 50% dense, you really need to have that ultrasound because they can't read -- she gave me a great analogy. she said in a

joan lunden, you've been working with her. what are you able to tell us? it, but joan is a warrior and when she gets something in her head, she goes with it. the principles of "rebuild" really helped her get through her process. >> what are those principles? if you're at home right now, obviously reading your book is key. but what are some things we can take away today to say do these three things and it will be a difference maker? >> the three things are if you can just focus on eating all nutrient dense whole foods, getting rid of processed foods. if you can incorporate 20, 25 minutes of high intensity interval training into your schedule four or five times a week, and just taking basic nutrients like multi vitamin, vitamin c, d, you'll have a greatest impact on your help. >> what about sleep? >> sleep is a big one. >> oops. wrong host. >> i was going to say. when people are stressed like i was, you don't sleep well. how do you feel when you don't sleep? you kind of feel a little hungover. that's an inflammatory process. all of those -- >> we sleep when
