the author of the new book, "what's the matter with white people," joan walsh.y to all of you. you heard mitt romney in claiming bill clinton is revolting from the president. have you done reporting on the subject in your book," the promise" which i read. would you please bring mr. romney up to speed? >> well, you know, it was a nice try by mitt romney to say that bark bash is some radical departure from bill clinton. but the radical departure from bill clinton was george w. bush and what he did in the first eight years of this century where they -- tried to slash taxes and slash regulations as a way of growing the economy. they have pathetic, utterly pathetic, job growth, some of the worst in many, many decades compared to bill clinton's 22 million new jobs. so what president clinton will do tonight is say yeah, okay, if you want to go back, let's go back to me. not to bush. who by the way didn't even show up at the republican convention which gives you some idea of, you they, what their feeling is about him. >> john, you anticipated my question to the great da

. >> joan walsh, you've written about the white working-class vote. the numbers don't bear out the places where romney was supposed to have an advantage are not coming together for him. >> right. i think that what we've seen this week is he's really in trouble in ohio he's really in trouble in florida. he cannot lose both those states. and paul ryan brought nothing to the ticket except fear. we have a situation where white seniors are afraid of medicare, their message that we're going to protect it did not get through, seniors saw through that. and so i don't -- we can obsess about the smaller states and it's really tight in nevada but in the end ohio and florida if he can't win those he can't win. >> let's talk about fear for a second because -- i'll bring you back in, jeff. there was a great screen shot still from the newest romney ad that says literally emblazoned across a person's face your job is in danger. but the question jeff, does that message compute to people that things are bad and thus you're going to vote for the other guy at this point?

joining me, joan walsh, editor at large for salon.com msnbc political analyst and all thor of the newlyeleased "what's the matter with white people." also perry bacon with the grio. welcome to you both. good to have you. joan, i'll begin with you. in your latest column you write most of mitt romney's speech was aimed at the undecided voters, all of those outside the coffin vengs floor. how do you think that message was received? >> i think people were with still so stunned from the clint eastwood segment they really didn't have time to pause and recover and focus on mitt romney. that was unfortunate for him. i think he did a decent job connecting and talking to disaffected obama voters saying we all wanted him to succeed. of course that's not true. the house republicans planned from day one to obstruct him. but sounding a nice inclusive tone and sort of more in sorrow than anger, you had such high hopes, what happened to them. but the speech really wasn't about anything that he would do for undecided voters or for the middle class. so it was really -- i don't know that there was anythin
