joining me now, jonathan capehart and joan walsh. thank you, both for being here. >> thanks rev. >> joan there's no denying president obama has momentum. and 50% in poll after poll. has the president's approval rating going up what is your read on it? >> well, my read on it is people really like him being the president and being presidential. and they like these moves. these moves that the republicans are attacking him for, like executive action on deferring deportation, the american public likes seeing something get done. he's raised the minimum rage for federal workers. he's proposed a new form of family leave policy. it's a little bit jury rigged but workers will be able to take six weeks family leave when they have a baby or a sick parent. so i want to say, comment on something that marco rubio said about him taking us back to the 20th century. the president in recent weeks is bringing us into the 21st century belatedly. this proposal on college access on community colleges it's the beginning of the way we used to think about thin

joining me now are jared bernstein and joan walsh. k you both for being here. >> thanks rev. >> thank you, rev. >> joan, mitt romney wants to talk about poverty and jeb bush is fighting for fairness? are we in the twilight zone? >> we've got these two plutocrats who now want to fight each other for who's going it be the president of the 1%, talking about fairness. i think it's really unfair rev, because what you're see in the republican party now is a recognition that yes, poverty is a problem, income equality is a problem, stagnating wages is a problem. they've blocked everything this president has tried to do. >> everything. >> they will not give him an increase in the minimum wage they passed a smaller stimulus than he wanted. they will not give him the infrastructure spending he wants. they will not give him an immigration bill. immigration reform is really important to wages because when we legalize people or give them some legal foot hold in this country, they have a little bit more of standing to push back when they're being tre

joining muss is john braybender and joan walsh. to start with the home team joan excuse me leadies second here. i think there's a catch-22 in republican politics if you want to win the presidency you can't win unless you get the nomination. you can't get the gnome fashion if you straight-arm the right wing. you have to show you see will be their president as well as other people's. isn't that a problem? >> the park adocks is what can get you elected can prevent you from being elected, so i think there's advice that comes with that. whoever the nominee is this time has to go beyond checking the boxes. i think they are to be able talk to hard-working families middle-income families who feel like they've been abandoned by both parties. most of our candidates don't believe in the minimum wage. i think that's outrageous. whoever will win -- >> my argument i guess my parents were among this crowd, there are a lot more cloth companies republicans than mink coat republicans. establishment and then the sort of sort of anti-establishment then

i'm joined by msnbc political analyst joan walsh. and michael steele.he huffington post sabrina siddiqui. i want to ask sabrina, has this got legs, as we say in journalism? will we be talking about this until scalise leaves? >> absolutely. i think there's palpable concern in the republican caucus that this problem isn't going to go away, especially with the amount of focus on his background. you have reporters looking into it, democratic operatives looking into it. there's always potential they could dig up more. talking to some republicans today on capitol hill, they're concerned that there could be more information that comes out about his association with the white supremacist group as well as the fact that his job is, as you said, to raise money, and they don't think -- >> how do you go to donors, mr. chairman, asking them for money if this guy has neo-nazi connections, that he's worked with holocaust deniers? how do you do it? >> you go very carefully.
