well, the meeting just adjourned about a half- hour ago and for the time being, fire chief joanne hayes- white is still the chief in san francisco. so the firestorm has been not put out, quelled at least a bit now for the time being. two dozen union members came to the mayor's office. they met with the mayor late this afternoon. it was a meeting that came after the chief herself met with the mayor earlier today in which she says he told her that she has his full backing. now, this is a crisis unheard of before in the long history of the san francisco fire department. there's a letter that these people brought to the mayor signed by every major group in the union saying that there was a grave crisis of confidence in leadership and that the department is failing to protect the lives and property of san franciscans. the most public issues is over a slow response time by ambulances. up to now, it can take an hour to get an ambulance on scene to take emergency cases to the hospital. and, in fact, the chief met with paramedics today to discuss that. but union members have a couple of beefs including
