[applause] >> first of all, i just want to thank spur and mfac for giving me this honor. i've never really won an award. it does feel like you won the oscars. it's different when you are standing here. i do not even have a written speech. i will speak from the heart. today is a very important day for me and my family because this happens to be my father's death anniversary. i want to dedicate this to my father. my mom flew in tonight. my brother, who works for bart. [applause] i have my nephew, who is here tonight. i want him to see me so he can follow my footsteps sunday to give back to the community. with me here are my managers and supervisors. i also have my longtime friend, jamie, who has been here. i see my former boss here. i have been nominated so many times. it really feels like you won an oscar. lastly, i wanted to thank my husband, who has been not just a husband to me, but he has been my chauffeur -- [laughter] mike coy cook, personal photographer, and no. 1 critic. i know

jocelyn le is on the phone right now. jocelyn, thank you for joining us. were you also at clackamas town center today during this shooting? >> yes. i was at the lancome makeup counter. and i was being helped by one of the sales associates. and the first shot, you know, your head kind of goes wow. and i thought something very loud crack. and then the second one, i knew immediately it was gunfire, one after another. and the sales associate grabbed me and we both crouched down by his workstation, and then just the gunfire one after another. and i just started praying that the lord would just protect us. and you know, you have this moment where you're thinking, okay, is he going to keep coming? and anyway, i don't know what made the sales associate stand up, but he says okay, we got to get out of here. and i'm just calling to let you know that there are heroes out there. he is a young man. he works for lancome company. and he got me -- weaved me in and out of the cosmetics counters, down the escalator, and he said okay, i want you to head out this door. he sai

[applause] >> our board of supervisors is very important to us. they make laws that we have to follow. it gives me great pleasure to introduce the president of the board of supervisors, david chiu. [applause] >> good afternoon. first, if any of you have ever wondered what an ls -- and elected officials sounds like with anesthesia and his mouth, i want to let you know that i got out of a dental chair 20 minutes ago after a few hours of dentists work. but i wanted to give a few remarks of how i think we are doing. i'm very much more are optimistic about how we're doing than four years ago. i read an article from the chronicle and it said that the candidates disagreed on everything, except for the need to crack down on entertainment violence. i did not propose anything for the first six months until there were half a dozen people affected. that was followed by a terrific shooting, which was then followed by an incident in union square. i want to take a moment and thank the san francisco

for people like 8-year-old jocelyn and her mother, who came to check the scene -- >> i think it's pretty amazing and it's coming up really, really high. >> reporter: but for the owner -- >> very concerned. you know, we don't want the building to get flooded. >> reporter: king tides, the highest tides of the year, are arriving along the california coast n some places, water is rising a couple of inches and others several feet. this was the manzanita park and ride where drivers were warned. risk. >> it just keeps getting higher every day. >> reporter: members of the marin rowing association says it's not as high as they have seen it but pretty close. >> looking at the bridge, you can see the watermark almost at its highest. >> the water is high and because of the high tides there's a lot of stuff floating into it so the boats are bumping into things, a lot of partially submerged logs and a pumpkin floated by. >> reporter: these tides happen once a year but some scientists say they are a look into the future. sea level will rise a foot within 40 years so researchers are asking people to doc

families are grieving the loss of loved ones and a community tries to pull together. 12-year-old jocelyn cardenaz came from danbury, connecticut it drop off flowers at a memorial for the 26 people killed at sandy hook elementary school. >> even though we didn't know anyone directly just hurt because you never know what's going to happen next. >> reporter: she is one of many grieving for those gunned down in newtown, connecticut friday morning. investigators identified the shooter as 20-year-old adam lanza. the medical examiner says everyone was shot multiple times with a rifle. >> this probably is the worst i have seen. >> reporter: eight boys and 12 girls all ages 6 and 7 died including anna marcus green the daughter of a well-known saxophone player and emily parker who moved to newtown a year ago. >> she was a type person that could just light up the room. she -- [ crying ] ... >> she always had something kind to say about anybody. >> reporter: this community of about 27,000 is coming together to try to cope with this tragedy. all throughout town people are putting up signs like this o

[applause] >> domestic spending cuts on the table for fiscal cliff talks. two different perspectives for you. james capretta, senior fellow bookings institution, codirector on senior families and james capretta come for ethics and public policy center and visiting scholar at aei. let me begin with you. are these potential cuts under sequestration devastating are manageable? >> somewhere in between. they are not a good idea. they would be very deep cuts. in a percent cut across the board is a very significant one-time cut for any program to sustain in an immediate year. here they are not a good idea. to be the end of the world? no. >> host: what you mean by that? >> guest: downsizi

i think jocelyn can attest that is not an option that is often given to the voters even if a voter asks for. there is resistance. so we had a number of problems with that. virginia, there was confusion because you're a new law that went into the work of multiple forms of id. we did get reports of people that were being told they have to show a photo id. in texas during early vote that was confusion about the id requirement. we didn't have as many reports and south carolina about confusion. so it was mixed but it wasn't just states that had a debate about it but it affected this entire process because it greatest confusion about what was required to vote and what wasn't. that was an impact we saw. >> we might not agree on this one. i guess a lease on a voter id stuff, anything that we can do to make sure they minimize voter fraud, that being said i think all, we'll have and the total stories about it being back on it being good, it not being affected i would love to see a study offer this election telling me something inclusive. good thing we're at pew. maybe they can do something, i don
