joining us now is michigan secretary of state, jocelyn benson. fresh off of your recent appearance where we were discussing the fact the jack smith's investigators had interviewed, you had spoken to you about their investigation. that makes me wonder what you might be wondering about the intersection, possible intersection of this case on the state charges with jack smith. do you sense in overlap in the investigation? >> certainly. thanks again for having me back. this is an important issue, maybe one of the most important issues as we enter the twenties running for election cycle to focus on -- and we have to recognize that the charges filed today in michigan, michigan was not the only state where we know of a whole slate of electors that was attempted in a fraudulent way to be presented to the federal government, whether it's congress, senate, national archives. it is no surprise, and should not be -- the federal government and justice department, through the special prosecutor's office would be looking into this as well. i think that their inv

that stood out to me because jocelyn benson said the same thing, that she was asked about the impact these lies had on election officials. what would jack smith's team be trying to do with that information? >> we kwuz ared to say building a case is like building a house. if you think of it that way, the misinformation is the foundation. everything that followed, all these pressure campaigns, all these schemes were all based on a lot, disinformation. the false claim that donald trump had won this election and that there was massive fraud. and it's not surprising we're hearing similar things from different state officials in different states because you would want, as a prosecutor, to ask the same slate of questions. if you find yourself getting the same type of answer over and over, that contributes to an argument that this was coordinated, intentional, this was a conspiracy. >> congressman, learning that hope hicks and jared kushner got interviewed last month by jack smith's team and looking back at what they said to your committee, it's interesting to see the roadmap that the justic

joining us now on all of this is michigan secretary of state jocelyn benson.ighest-ranking election official. and someone who has also spoken to jack smith in the january 6th probe. secretary benson, thank you for joining us this morning. i do want to ask you about what you just heard there, what we just played. a fake elector saying the trump campaign asked us to do that. but i wonder, is there a case here that they could make that they were misled or that these were just provisional, just in case they won other legal challenges. do you see them making those arguments and that there's evidence to back that up? >> well, certainly a lot of arguments are going to be made, but i think the evidence really shows that this was an actionable well thought-out plan. the affidavit suggests individuals were led into the basement of the party headquarters and some chose, including a former secretary of state, chose not to be a part of it, which should havbeen a sign that something was awry. she had to then be replaced. and so there's a number of pieces to suggest that the

joining me now is michigan secretary of state, jocelyn benson.u being with us. what's your reaction to the charges filed today? >> i think it's, well, one, i'm very pleased to see these charges brought because this was far more than just a ceremonial attempt. this was an actual, actionable effort to undermine the will of the voters. one that we fought at the time successfully and now we need to see justice for those who attempted. and secondly, i think it's a really strong, bold statement. rooted in facts and evidence, and the law, that says, it is not okay for you, for anyone to try to block the will of the people from coming to fruition in any election, regardless of the winner. and if you attempt to do that, in any election, there will be consequences. >> are you concerned or is there a chance, in your opinion, that the new state charges and michigan might impact or impede the special counsel's investigation? >> no. i think facts are facts and law is the law, and certainly, the violations of michigan law run parallel to violations at the feder

else who has spoken with investigators in that very same probe is the michigan secretary of state jocelynenson, who joins me now. secretary benson, thanks for joining us. so you've said that federal prosecutors are going into great detail to try to understand what happened and try to prevent something like january 6th from ever happening again. we know they're also talking to officials in arizona and in georgia. what specifically do you think they're trying to learn? >> i think a lot of what -- i mean, again, i don't want to compromise the investigation itself. but a lot of what i observed and have been speaking with multiple authorities about is the connection between the misinformation, the testimony before legislative hearings, the lawsuits, and then the very real threats, physical threats of violence both to myself, my family, other elected officials, and of course the tragedy of january 6th. and really the connection between the words and the efforts and the strategy, which has its own legal complexities and illegality. the false slate of electors being one example of that. and then
