we begin with jodi hernandez with the details on that fire. >> reporter: the good news, this fire is now 70 percent contained tonight. the bad news, it has grown quite a bit. now, more than 1,000 acres have burned. we are standing on the hillside where the flames burned over late this afternoon. in fact, while we were here to watch it. now, we're going to pan over to the right. you can see there is quite a bit of activity. even though the fire is 70 percent contained it did not take much to get this 8 alarm fire up and running. it has put every available fire fighter from this county and beyond in battle mode. fire crews in solano county is giving all they've got to a fast moving fire that started off of highway 12 just after noon. it didn't take long for 40 mile per hour winds to whip the flames into an 8 alarm fire.

jodi hernandez joins us from the fire lines. we last saw you you said the fire was 70 percent contained. >> reporter: jessica, it is still about 70 percent contained. i just checked with the firefighters just a short time ago. but it is also still very active. now, we're going to show you the area that is actively burning. you're looking at the marsh area. what you are seeing and what is fueling the fire right now is tully which we are told is high in oil content. that's what is still smoking and burning. fire crews have been working very hard to get a handle on this fire that spread incredibly quickly. it started right off of highway 12 at about 12:00 this afternoon. because of the red flag warning conditions, it just took off, quickly growing intogájç an 8 a blaze. firefighters say it was fanned by wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour. we saw a number of cattle threatened by the flames. fortunately the fire did not injure any of the animals. again, the fire is 70 percent contained, that despite what firefighters call classic

reporting live in pittsburgh, jodie hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, jodie. let's turn things over to jeff ranieri. it's not that warm outside. is it unusual to have a red flag warning? >> not necessarily. it's all about the wind. we heard from our colleagues tracking it at the fire station. what we have happening is this north wind moving across the bay. that really is a particular importance because that wind lacks any moisture. prevailing winds here in the bay area is typically coming in from the pacific ocean. this is very dry air moving from the interior locations all the way across parts of the east bay and also for the south bay. so i do think the most critical areas with that fire threat will be the north bay. over the next 18 hours, winds likely 20 to 48 miles per hour especially in the hills above 1,000 feet. we've already seen humidity levels as low as 10% today. here are some of the max wind gusts, up to 44 miles per hour. the coastline at .8. showers in that forecast. that's all coming up in the seven day. >> okay, jeff. we'll see you in a little

we have jody hernandez on site with the update on this fire. are you with us? >> i'm here. that is right. the good news tonight is this fire about 70% contained. the bad news, it has grown to more than 1,000 acres. this is exactly what firefighters have been fearing during this red flag warning. all it took was just a spark to get this wind whipping. this fire turned into an eight-alarm fire. there are a lot of cattle out here. some ranch homes. there are some hunting clubs. we are told a half dozen homes remain threatened at this hour. there are dozens and dozens of firefighters out here that are attacking this fire from the ground and from the air. we've been watching helicopter drops all afternoon. this fire is now about 70% contained. this fire started just after noon, right off of highway 12. it's unclear what started it. perhaps a spark from a car driving by, but again, it took off very, very quickly. whipped by winds that were blowing up to 40 miles an hour. the county has every available resource out here. they have called for mutual aid. they are taking this very s

i'm jody hernandez. >>> we're live outside the church where that service is taking place for andy lopez. what's going on jean? >> reporter: a day of demonstration is now turning to a day of prayer. take a look. you can see there is a hearse here. andy lopez's body arrived about ten minutes ago. officials from the church are coming out to greet the body. hundreds of people are expected. we're seeing a lot of families startingo pour into the church here. i'm seeing a lot of emotional long faces as people file into the church. this mass was scheduled to begin at 5:00. it's going to begin a little bit late as people begin to file in again and again. people are here. they say they are here to support the lopez family, to support them emotionally and to support their efforts to seek justice for the 13-year-old. i can hear some singing inside the church. we're waiting for the body to be taken inside the church. the funeral mass will last about an hour and a half. it will be in spanish. someone claiming to be a family member is asking for a peaceful night on andy's facebook page. we'll have an
