here's nbc's jodi hernandez. reporter the salmon are making their way from the bay through these floodgates and into the lake merritt channel here. the unusual salmon sightings are causing a lot of excitement. yes, it was amazing when i heard it. i couldn't believe it myself. james robinson of oakland's lake merritt institute is almost giddy about the salmon that have been showing up at lake merritt. so far. four salmon have been recovered over the last week, and one was even spotted swimming in the water. i've been at the institute for over ten years, and this is only the second time me seeing chinook salmon in the lake. i'm not sure if they came all the way down here. we caught up with katie noonan this afternoon as she followed up on a reported salmon sighting on the shore. the rotary nature center volunteer recovered the four dead salmon. she's fascinated by their return. they're coming back using cues that they have to complete their life cycle. and they're coming into the center of oakland, right here to us
