this is a story about a fighter.meet jodi owens. she was diagnosed with stage-two breast cancer at 30 and a one-and-a-half- year-old son at home. "the day that i was told, i was sitting at the park with my son and my phone rang, it was my doctor and she said 'the results came back from cancer,'" jodi said. it was a whirlwind physically, emotionally and spiritually. but, jodi quickly realized she had to go on.when chemotherapy started and she found out she'd lose her hair, jodi decided to take control of her illness before her illness took control of her. she invited her family and had a hair cutting party."we giggled, my eyes welled up," jodi said. jody hernandez is in richmond this evening. how does it all work and will it work? >> it's really very simple. if you find yourself in a situation where you cannot call for emergency help, the richmond police department says all you need to do is grab your cell phone and dial 911 with your location and they'll be on the way. imagine dispatchers answer hundreds of calls for help every day. starting this week they can take more than phone calls. that's the sound of somebody text messaging a 911 plea for help. >> we are now accepting 911 texts from the community that we serve. >> people who liver in richmond, kensington and san pablo can send a text to 911, a potentially life saving option. >> if you're hiding in the closet and you have assailants in your home, you don't want to give your location up. for that the text will be critical and crucial. >> richmond is the first agency to launch the program. the program is already proving successful in southern california. last month a hearing impaired woman with a medical emergency texted 911 and got the help shoo needed. >

our jody hernandez has more. >> reporter: we learned this water polo player was here in court to hear his punishment. we don't know what the punishment is because juvenile proceedings are highly confidential. but we're getting a look at the video that captured the incident. now, i've been talking to the victim's parents. they don't want to go on camera but they do want to set the record straight. a family friend spoke on their behal behalf. >> play respectfully. >> reporter: that is the message that others hope that this message will help with, an incident that left a family friend seriously hurt. >> intent to injure another athlete. that is what it showed. >> reporter: this is the video clip that led to the high school student facing criminal charges. payan describes how he and the family view it. >> he intentionally brings the athlete's head down towards his knee, and quickly drives the knee up towards the face. >> reporter: the maneuver left the victim, a 15-year-old with a broken nose that required surgery. >> that was one of the most calculated, callous, skillful acts intended to

reporting live in oakland, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> we'll look forward to seeing that. thank you. >> in the dark and nowhere to turn to, but to the public for help. that's where the feds say they stand after hundreds of interviews, the fbi needs help filling in 18-minute gap in the moments of the san bernadino shooters. >> it very well may not be an important fact, but until we close that gap, we don't know for sure. >> federal agents are looking for any video that shows syed farook and his wife tashfeen malik between 12:59 and 1:17 on the day of the shooting. it's that gap the feds are trying to fill. authorities say the couple drove around zigzagging within a large l shaped area that included portions of san bernadino and the neighborhooding redlands. fbi also says it believes the shootings were inspired act, but no indication they were foreign directed. the fbi has many more unanswered questions about the shooters' movements. that's coming up in 20 minutes on nightly news. >> new at 5:00, hurt on the job. a firefighter fell through a building floor while battling a b

nbc bay area's jodi hernandez is in our contra costa county newsroom. this is becoming more common. jail as a housing option. >> raj, folks here in contra costa county say the woman must have been in dire straits to herself in jail.something to get but investigators say she's done so twice now. this was the scene outside the contra costa county jail this morning. investigators say 35-year-old chrissy had just been released from jail for throwing rocks at cars. when she began smashing the windows of cars parked in the jail parking lot. saying she wanted to stay in jail. >> i'm a bail bondsman. every year, there's a handful of clients that kind of do this. they need shelter, so they get in trouble or they get a drunk in public so they're in jail for a night or two. >> while it's unclear hot the suspect's motive for wanting to remain behind bars is, the sheriff's department says this is the second time she's damaged cars claiming she wants to be jailed. >> it's unfortunate, but it's not surprising. >> david, executive director at loaves and fishes, which provides meals to those in need

that's where channel 13's jodi whitworth joins us. megan -- for the last three hours rescue crews... the call first came in a rescue but once crews arrived they took one look and new it was going to be a recovery effort. this all began as a small group of construction workers were breaking ground so they could track hoe which you can kind of see behind me, that the actual piece of equipment that was being used which is an excavator so they were working on that. the individual was down or in the hole with the operator, operating the excavator above - sgt. jason ferguson - altoona police department authorities say the pit is about have a trench wall in place to brace the sides of the trench altoona's fire and rescue team does not have a team that specializes in trench rescues which is why the des moines techinicial rescue crew is helping with the recovery. authorities say this wont be an easy task -- the cold weather is playing a big factor. but also getting the structure in place within the trench is difficult. crews are having to figh

our reporter jodi hernandez is working on this story today. you can catch her reports at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. >>> another black eye for santa clara county deputies office this morning. a bay area deputy accused of pulling a gun on an employee at the jack in the box. santa clara police arrested santa clara deputy benjamin lee early sunday morning after someone reported a disturbance between an employee and a drive-through customer. this happened on el camino real in santa clara. arrested for dui and brandishing a gun. the union vice president for santa clara county deputy says this is unacceptable behavior. it's unclear if the gun was lee's service weapon. he's on administrative leave. santa clara police are investigating. the sheriff's office will hold an internal investigation as well. >>> now to new details on the ten u.s. sailors detained by iran. they are now free. >> the sailors, nine men, one woman taken into custody by iran yesterday when their two small u.s. navy vessels drifted into iranian claimed waters during a training mission.

i'm jodi whitworth. we haven't seen temperatures this cold all season. wind chills between 10 and 15 degrees below zero...and it will continue to get colder. meteorologist amber alexander joins us now with first look at the forecast. amber, how long can we expect this temperatures to last the cold is the big story this weekend, a wind chill advisory is in effect from midnight until 10am on sunday with wind chills nearing 20-30 below zero tonight. the clouds will clear out overnight tonight, so temperatures will stay bitterly cold on sunday. be sure to bundle up if you are headed out late tonight or early sunday morning as temperatures and wind chills are going to be dangerously cold. temperatures will rebound slightly on monday with highs expected to be in the middle 20s, but there is a slight chance of a few light snow showers late monday evening. another cold front will move through on tuesday, high temperatures will only reach the low teens. two of the three democratic questions from iowans in des moines today. the "putting families first forum" saw b

good evening and thanks for joining us, i'm jodi whitworth. the deep freeze is back and it's here to stay -- at least for the next couple of days. dangerous wind chills will be felt across the entire state... meteorologist amber alexander joins us now for a first look at the forecast. bitterly cold temperatures are in store fr the overnight hours. a wind chill warning will be in effect from 9pm until noon on sunday for those north of hwy 30...wind chills will be between -30 and -40. light snow is expected tonight, 0.5" in the des moines metro, with up to 1.0" toward the southwest. skies will clear out during the day on sunday as arctic high pressure moves in, temperatures will only be a couple degrees above zero, so wind chills will still be nearly -15 to -20. temperatures will slowly increase throughout the next week and we'll be back into the low 30s by the weekend. for the most part it will be a gloomy week, and there is another chance for snow on tuesday. snow totals look to be around 2.0" right now, but will have to bedated throughout the
