practice, we were at our democratic baseball practice and i was there with my three-year-old and joe barden who coaches the republicans was at the republican practice with his ten-year-old. and just reminds you that we signed up for this as elected officials and we put ourselves out there so that we could do what we call public service to contribute back to the country. reminds you our families didn't. as i thought about steve's wife jennifer and his two children, it reminds you that they didn't sign up for this. but the other point tells us we have a real mental health crisis in this country, and whether it is the rhetoric or a bunch of other things, this is not the country that -- we know it is not the country we sacrificed to make a more perfect union. this country is probably on the verge of going backwards in terms of peace and tranquility and all those things, but nevertheless we will continue with the game tonight. >> senator richmond giving a limited update i think on the congressman's fight here medically, totally understandable, keeping a lot of that private as you would understan

joe barden's ten-year-old boy was here, and we got him in the dug out and put him under the bench. i got a look at the shooter for just a fast shot. he had a blue shirt. he was firing into the dug out. then somebody yelled, the shooter is down and so i ran out to steve and put pressure on the wound. >> so the shooter was shot? >> the shooter -- there was a lot of yelling going on, but i could not tell what was, if anything, was the shooter. >> the shooter was or wasn't shot? >> the shooter was shot. i believe he's still living. >> senator, how many numbers of shot? >> we just saw him leave in a stretcher. >> roger williams. >> a lot of people got a few injuries diving into the dug out. >> and so the 50 shots -- >> i don't believe any deceased at this point. one person that works for tyson food i think comes out and was shot in the chest. he's probably the most critical. >> senator, you said the security was shot. >> yes. >> was your sense this shooter knew you guys were out here and targeted you guys purposely. >> i would assume so. it is not clear whether steve scalise was targete

joe barden had a 10-year-old boy here and he made it into the dugout. we were trying to keep him under the bench. anyway. >> all right. but you're doing okay? >> yeah, i wasn't hit. >> have you talked to representatives? >> i called steve scalise's wife after we got off the field just so she wouldn't hear it somewhere else. so i talked to paul ryan this morning already, vice president pence and others. thank you. >> jeff flake from the state of arizona who was on the field. as he said, he called steve scalise's wife soon after the incident. he didn't want her to hear it from the news. he spoke to vp mike pence as well as paul ryan. one interesting point of note, you know, when things like this happen, you really have to take a step back and give time to this because as jeff flake pointed out, he said that the man had dark hair, appeared to be in his 40s and 50s. yet we heard from a different eyewitness earlier, a woman who walked by the field and went inside the ymca to call 911 when she saw a man with a rifle approaching the field and what we heard was

it's gratifying an refreshing to hear your words, to hear joe barden's words, thanking democrats for providing gifts for his kids. i don't think everyday consumers of political news appreciate the kind of comradery that exists. i appreciate some of the things said yesterday by others, that we've reached a time -- john mccain in '08 when he chastised his own supporters making comments on whether or not then candidate obama was born in the united states and whether he was a muslim. saying that's not true, he's a decent man. we have different viewpoints about the future of the country. as low of a moment as yesterday was, it was pleasing to see so many members of congress and political figures rise to the moment. >> mika, there's no -- we can always press the reset button. we can always move forward. i'm talking everybody from president trump to the most vile person that's whipping up conspiracy theories to make millions of dollars, that it might end up killing people. it's critical for those members, for house members to actually do what harold and i did. and not only form a friendship
