correspondent and an msnbc political analyst, with me in studio former new york democratic congressman joe crowley. good to see all of you. peter, you report today that people close to joe biden believe he has begun to accept the idea he may not be able to win in november. very carefully worded reporting as we should all be doing right now, but how do you reconcile that with what we're hearing from his campaign chair just this morning, and then also coupled with bernie sanders making yet another very public statement of support. >> yeah, look, you know, the campaign, of course, is not going to try to cut off the president's options by suggesting he is anything other than in this race up until the moment he may change his mind. if he does change his mind, obviously, you know, that will make these statements inoperative. but for the moment he hasn't changed his mind. what people around him are saying is he seems to be increasingly accepting that he may need to. he has been shaken by a number of factors. first of all, nancy pelosi's private but very insistent conclusion that he may not be able to win

. >> joining us now is joe crowley, the former chair of the house democratic caucus, and former rnc communicationr doug heye. the rules committee is dominated by harris people. what about the role of nancy pelosi? she known to have concerns, she said that on "morning joe," i've been reporting that, but joe biden is seeing her as the behind the scenes, you know, puppet master of the opposition in the house, whereas i've been told she was listening to a lot of house members that it was coming up, you know? >> i think that's right andrea. she was listening to her members, in the districts very competitive. there are very few districts that are competitive. she was listening to though folks. >> he's supposed to be so furious, and he and pelosi were so close, closer than with barack obama. arguably he appreciated -- >> i can understand that, and at the same time, he's made his decision. it's an historic decision. >> and she's all in? >> i think so. i think he has made the right decision. he's always put his country first. it's so admirable. he's a person of character. the other guy is a character. thi

also with us is former congressman from new york joe crowley, who used to chair the house caucus. great to have you here. so how much of a shift is this for nancy pelosi on biden's future and how are her comments being heard on the hill right now? >> reporter: a spokesperson would argue it's not a shift. i'll show you what they said. speaker pelosi fully supports whatever president biden decides to do. we must turn our attention to why this race is so important. donald trump would be a disaster for our country. implicit in pelosi's comments on mj was the fact that she's saying whatever biden decides to do, at the same time we see the way president biden has said forcefully his decision is made. he's staying in this race. now he's working to shore up the confidence of members of congress on the house, burr also in the senate. and pelosi is no longer text cally in leadership, but she carries a lot of weight within this democratic caucus. some members have talked about the weight they persuade biden to get out of this race. they think she has a big enough stature to do so. her voice

crowley and "washington post" white house, welcome both. you both focused in your reporting on how kamala harris, if she were elected, might approach the middle east differently than joeecades of experience with israel and also his full embrace of netanyahu, far longer than many democrats, elected democrats and protesters thought was appropriate given the way the war has been progressing. michael. >> yeah, andrea. president biden does have that bond, and you know, i think at least until recently, he considered netanyahu something of a friend, albeit one with whom he disagreed a lot. and kamala harris just doesn't have that bond. she's younger so she comes maybe not entirely from a different generation, but attitudes towards israel have changed, and as one jewish american conservative put it to me, she just doesn't feel the connection the way biden does in her kishkas, which is a word for guts, your stomach, your belly. and so i think -- and then on top of that, andrea, harris came out and said some very sharply critical things about israel's management of this military campaign in gaza, and i think empathized with the suffering and death of civilians in gaza in a way
