joe fryer is in jackvillsonvill north carolina.an you tell us about what you're seeing there as the storm begins to make landfall on the coast of north carolina? >> reporter: the wind continue here, david. at last check, they were gusting north of 60-70 miles per hour. the major concern right now, at least where we are, when the winds pick up, there's lots of debris around. i think i showed you last time one of these shingles. we continue to see these shingles come off the roof of our hotel. we continue to see trees snapped in two or more parts at least in some cases. that's going to be one of the major concerns in and around wilmington is flying debris, trees on power lines, power outages around north carolina right now of 280,000 so far. tens of thousands without power here in wilmington right now. the mayor of wilmington telling me yesterday that was going to likely be the case for several days. duke power, the major power company, giving the heads-up on that yesterday, that the power outages would be persisting for some time. n

joe fryer is standing by. what is the situation in jacksonville? >> despite the fact that the worst of the storm has passed by, the rain hasn't stopped. we've seen some of the heaviest bands of rain this morning. it's been relentless since thursday afternoon. because of that, we're seeing flooding. i'm standing on cork street. cork street stops where i'm standing. if you look in my direction, you can see this neighbor is under water and has been since yesterday morning and afternoon. you can see that's a car that's largely submerged with the trunk open. we were here last night. that car was not there. it appears the flood waters carried that car into that location. just a few minutes ago basically right in front of where that car is, we saw six deer cross the road in those high flood waters. jacksonville is about a 20 mile drive to get to the ocean. it sits along a river. that's what the flooding is here. combine the surge with the high tide and the rain they've been getting here, that's what's causing the flooding issues. they've seen river floodi

in jacksonville, north carolina, nbc correspondent joe fryer, with whom we spoke at the beginning of the last hour, joe, i want to get to the story about that couple or family leaving with their pets. first of all, the governor of north carolina has said the floodwaters are rising in places that don't usually get affected like this. are you seeing evidence of that? >> reporter: that's exactly what we're seeing here. now, where i'm standing right now, this is a street that's flooded a little bit before, not quite this much. but earlier this morning, we were actually in another neighborhood about 15 minutes from here. the people who live there tell us they've been here since the '80s, they've never seen any flooding before. but when they woke up this morning, there was water on the floor and it rapidly started to rise. if you walked down the street in the neighborhood, the water was chest-high. it caught a lot of people you've guard and they needed to be rescued by neighbors, good samaritans, and the national gua guard, getting them out with boats and getting them to safer ground. on th

joining me now is joe fryer from jacksonville, north carolina. and joe, what's going on there? >> reporter: hey, there, chris, well, as the sun has gone down the wind and the rain have really picked up here. that's, of course, one concern. but the biggest concern in a place like jacksonville is flooding. i'm standing right now above the new river here which is expected to go up dramatically over the next day or two. here in jacksonville we're not right on the ocean. tough drive about 20 miles to get to the ocean. despite that, storm surge is still an issue and a concern here. they're bracing for the possibility that the river here and the bays could still surge as high as seven feet. that tells you just how powerful this hurricane is. and it's not just the storm surge. it's the fact that we're going to see a lot of rain coming up tonight into tomorrow, likely into the weekend, relentless rain as this storm slowly moves through. that's also going to fill up the river and cause a lot of flooding. and it's not just here in jacksonville. but go even farther inland, they're expectin
