our senior washington correspondent joe johns is with us now. can only guess, joe, you're also a lawyer, i'm sure you looked into this, that six officers you probably can imagine those lawyers do not want them tried together but want to do something called severing the cases. are they pitching far? >> they are pitching for that. and it's sort of a no-brainer ashleigh. the riots in april took everybody by surprise. the city doesn't want to be surprised again and, yes, it's all hands on deck for baltimore city police. the state police by the way are being put on stand by. something like 4,000 sworn and civilian police personnel in the city. it's being called a precautionary move by the baltimore city police department. they took harsh criticism after the riots back in the spring that followed the death and funeral of freddie gray in police custody. this move is part of the preparation for those court hearings on the charges against the six baltimore police officers. all of the officers say they're not guilty. now, in a statement, the police departm

joe johns, thank you so much. nia-malika henderson, the comments from joe have stirred a lot of controversy but they do appeal to certain parts of the republican base. the question is, are they helping boost his fundraising, do you think? >> quite possibly. they are sending out pretty explicit fundraising appeals around this issue. they sent one out this morning. the headline to the e-mail, the subject matter was i will not back down. it is very likely that they are generating some buzz among their supporters. people are already inclined to like ben carson. people are already on their mailing list. sure, they could have a fundraising within that network. it will be interesting to see if they broaden that. there's a family values, sort of value voter summit on friday. he'll be on the stage talking about these issues as well. we'll see. i do think typically candidates do this where if they are in trouble they sort of say, no, no, no, we're raising a lot of money on this. time and again, we will not know in fact if th

i want to ask you the most basic question of the server, joe johns.hat is a private server, why did she have it and does everyone in washington have a private server? >> no. a private server is a computerized device that handles e-mail and it's certainly a little bit unusual for a government official to have one. and even more unusual for a government official to actually use that private e-mail server exclusively for their own e-mail. and that's what she did again and again over a long period of time. she says she did it out of convenience. one of the reasons why is she wanted to be able to use just one e-mail for both her business communications as well as her personal communications, and that is what has caused the controversy. >> was there anything illegal about it then? and were it to be illegal now? >> it would be illegal now. regulations changed in 2014 that would prohibit the use of a server. this server, if there's a file room in your office where you work, in the back of it usually there's a billing kpoorter and that's the computer that send

joe johns was saying, when he was talking to folks going into the event today, carson had -- was getting was all support. it was all support from the folks going into that event. you look at surveys, look at the new york times/cbs survey from 2013, 16% of republicans had an unfavorable view of islam. even more recent studies kind of say the same thing. how much of an impact do you think this will have, what he said? >> well, i don't think it necessarily -- you know, unfortunately, has a dramatic impact on, you know, the people that may or may not support him because there are a lot of voters that share that view. but the role of leadership is to show leadership. and to inform people when they're incorrect about things. a lot of americans, the only exposure they've had to islam is what happened on 9/11 or other terrorist attacks. it is important, i think, for our country's leaders to, you know, to bring some reason and some wisdom to the debate. and, you know, say that something's wrong when it just is wrong. >> seeing condemnation from other presidential candidates. we'll see what ben ca

that will become increasingly a huge source of his strength taking on hillary clinton and maybe joe biden. johnn, playing into another element of his strength, which is his consistency. that speech is a different speech in terms of some of the words and some of the themes and reaching across the party aisle, but in terms of how he looks giving it and the kinds of principles it embodies, thoroughly consistent with everything he has been saying throughout this campaign. and that consistency is so key to why people have been drawn to him, why he has generated not just support but enthusiasm and so much more enthusiasm than hillary clinton has been able to muster in this campaign. mark: i'm sure his campaign has discussions both before and after, but can you imagine if hillary clinton was thinking about going to liberty university? she would have hundreds of hours of meetings. lots of preparation of what could go wrong. the guy just went into the lions den, and did and did a great job. john: and they would have rewritten her speech 437 times. it would have been a nightmare of cobbled together speec
