cnn's joe johns is live in port-au-prince haiti. joe, what are you seeing there? l of what you said there, the roads into and out of the disaster zone are often either covered in debris or controlled by armed gangs, making it very difficult to get in and out. so we took a look at the helicopter convoy that has been moving patients out of the disaster zone and over here to port-au-prince where they can get to hospitals to be treated. >> reporter: the helicopter convoy bringing the most seriously injured from the earthquake zone to port-au-prince haiti, running from sun up to sun down. today they're greeted by a surgeon, a broken bone specialist who quickly evaluates their condition. the 7.2 magnitude earthquake left more than 2,000 people dead and over 12,000 people injured. causing hospitals in haiti to be completely overwhelmed. a short distance by air, but getting here can be a slow process. this 23-month-old girl suffered a laceration running from thigh to ankle in saturday's earthquake. when she finally was flown into the capital, her leg was badly infected. >>

let's go live to cnn's joe johns live for us in port toe -au-pri. what is it looking like there?: the prime minister has declared three days of mourning as the government tries to figure out what it can do for the vehicle it ims, victims, many of whom spent the night in the rain after losing their homes, programerhaps other fami members. as the sun comes up, we'll find out just faired. the numbers are terrible, 1400 killed, something like 7,000 people injured so far. and 37,000 homes destroyed. just an unimaginable tragedy for this country. by the way, this is a country that does not have the institutions to recover from a situation like this. listen to what is going on with the health care workers. >> translator: yesterday it was really hard and we didn't have enough staff didn't have any staff. although we kept them until 6:00 a.m. >> reporter: moving through the streets of the city here, port-au-prince, it is very evident that this country has not recovered from the earthquake ten years ago that took more than 200,000 lives. the question now is how are other institutions going

joe johns is on the ground at port-au-prince.th the storm approaching. >> right. so from what we could see, the storm has moved out after a long night where many of those people down at the earthquake site in fact first lost their homes and then had to sleep in the rain overnight. i could tell you it is pretty clear that the med evacs are continuing, the u.s. coast guard and others moving people who are injured out of the area of the earthquake and over to hospitals here in the city of port-au-prince for treatment. so, all of that continues, but the counting continues as well. as you said, we did get a glimpse of the numbers, 1,400 people killed, something like 7,000 people injured and about 36 or 37,000 homes destroyed and that of course is why so many people had to sleep out in the rain. one of the big questions, of course, here in haiti, is it seems like there are disasters had a happen over and over again and why is the government not more responsive. well we know this is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. but it

cnn's joe johns joins us now from port-au-prince. e today. >> reporter: well, just yesterday the numbers increased rather dramatically, as you pointed out, up to 1,941 dead. we are awaiting in about 40 minutes another news conference for any updates the authorities here on the ground in haiti can give us. there are certainly tremendous concerns on the ground in the disaster zone. a lot of people complaining, in fact, about why the aid is moving so slowly. multiple reasons for that. probably the most important reason is that a lot of the supplies have to go by air bridge, by helicopter, in other words, instead of on the roads. the reason for that is pretty simple. haiti has a long-standing problem with bandits, with criminals and gangs, armed gangs, by the way, controlling the roads in and out of remote places like where this disaster zone is located, and the authorities are frustrated with it. in fact, over the last 24 hours, the united states office for coordination of humanitarian relief put out a tweet indicating they needed to get
