this discussion about joe lieberman about the changing senate or is it on joe lieberman himself and his own political legacy over the years? we'd like to talk to you about senate politics with the nexus being senator lieberman's announcement. let's listen a little bit to what he had to say yesterday. >> along the way, i have not always if it comfortably into conventional, political boxes. maybe you've noticed that. democrat, republican, liberal, conservative. because i've always thought my first responsibility was not to serve a political party but to serve my constituents, my state and my country and then to work across party lines to make sure things get done for them. whatever the partisan or party line that is dwoid us, they are far more important than the shared values that unite us and requiretous work together to make decisions, to me that's what public leadership and service is all about. >> senator lieberman in his announcement yesterday. the front page story for the harford counter -- courant, our guest wrote the headline. it suggested more or less that he didn't leave the par

. >> and that is senator joe lieberman. he ran last time as an independent.democratic senator kent conrad is not going to run again. a bunch of other senate democrats fighting tough reelection fights in 2012. any thoughts on what the next senate is going to look like? >> right now looks good for the republicans. but obviously, two years is a lifetime in politics. every democrat up in 2006 -- 20121 in 2006, a great democratic year. republicans to survive and 2006 are pretty strong. you have a lot of states that are purple that turned red since then. pennsylvania, ohio, florida, go right through the list. michigan even. >> numbers are terrible for democrats. >> lieberman and conrad have been around for a long time. >> democrats keep a connecticut, and north dakota -- after 2012 is unlikely there will be any democrat. >> you have this institution. what does it cost you to lose the institutional memory? >> anytime you lose it cost you something. but it seems that with each election cycle, we get people who are more at the edges of left and right at less likely to

joe lieberman is -- is technically an independent but he does caucus with the democrats and on most things he votes with the democrats. gwen: quietly. >> so probably a -- if you were to look at the politician, probably a democrat wins. that stays the same. and then kent conrad, though, that seat is -- very likely to switch into republican hands. so, what i think is over it begins to underscore is the degree to which the democrats in the senate particularly are going to be playing defense over the next two years. the number to look at here, the map is there will be 33 seats on the ballot in two years. 23 of those are current le held by democrats and a lot of those are very conservative states. so you're going to see a lot of senators right now, because there is the time whether you have to -- to startinging -- thinking about the decision, you have to give your party back if the home state time to figure out somebody else to run. to raise the money. and a lot of these men and women are looking at very -- very difficult races two years from now. it becomes a question of -- gwen: decision whet

is the president really to see joe lieberman out of the senate? look, obviously we had a disagreement on the 2000 presidential campaign, but i think senator lieberman is -- look, take the most recent, the progress that we were talking about that was made in the lame-duck. i think i've easy senator lieberman is somebody who, while having disagreements with this white house and with senator obama when he was in the united states senate, clearly played an important and instrument role in rolling back something that he and the president shared, i believe in the justice of don't ask, don't tell. so i think that obviously senator lieberman made a decision as he said to go on and do something different in his life. and while we haven't agreed with him on every issue, i think clearly there are a whole post of issues, energy independence, don't ask, don't tell, a whole lot of issues that the president was happy to see senator lieberman's leadership and support on. >> did they get together and say let bygones be god -- let bygones be bygones and let's move
