do you think joe manchin had chutzpah as he took the process? well, i talked about, yeah to him he believes that he does. yeah. the kind of founding father, you know, basically said that you give a wide berth to people to be sensitive to your constituents. i do think that in a bunch of areas like child tax credit and and billionaires paying their fair, fair that had i been able to do what we did together he and i on clean tax credit for he invited me we could have made more progress. that is one thing that stood out to me about hotspot. reading about it is a lot of people operate kind of with their own moral compass and maybe they get to different on what they think is the best thing to push for. well, my my view has always been you have to take people where you are. what happened? i believe joe manchin on the energy issue, for example, if lots of people would say i have a good idea, i'm going to develop idea and then i'm going to take it to senator manchin. what we said is know. let's listen to him. and the first time i brought up this idea of

and you've tried to carve out a role as a moderate deal maker much like your friend joe manchin did inhat do you -- where are some areas that you think you and your republican colleagues can find agreement then, get legislation moving? >> sure, and i've -- you know, when i first got into politics back in, you know, 20 years ago, 22 years ago, as a mayor and then as a governor, what attracted me was the opportunity to get something done, to not get so involved in the politics and really look at where is the compromise, the alignment of self-interest so that we can get to the compromise and move forward and improve things for our common future. and joe manchin was, i think, very successful at hearing both sides and i try to be more of a listener than a talker. you know, i've never persuaded anybody to change their mind about anything that mattered to them, why i'm right and they're wrong, and you repeat back to them their same words. some people told me that's like marital therapy, but you say, that soup was dropped right on your lap. oh, no, it very hot. repeating back people's words, l

jonathan cott, former senior adviser to senators joe manchin and chris. and brad todd, republican strategist and a cnn political commentator. welcome to all of you. thank you so much for being here. another hectic day in the life of a white house reporter such as yourself. you've seen a lot. we've all seen quite a bit in the last two weeks. um, can you just kind of take us behind the scenes and in terms of how this played out yesterday, as the markets, obviously there was incredible volatility in the morning. futures were down through the weekend. we know that's something that president trump pays close attention to. ultimately these two deals are cut. it makes it feel like it is the trump show right. as opposed to the actual inaction of policy, which is kind of where we've ended up. and yet these tariffs are going into effect on china. i mean, what do you know. what can you tell us about how this all plays out and what happens next? >> well, i think, number one, you're right to say it's a little bit of a trump show. and using the markets as a prism is a
