we all talked about joe mccarthy and those guys in the 1940's, 19 50's, and 1960's. but the first red scare we only touched on lightly. it was not really driven home to me. i did not develop an interest in it until i was a young tank officer at beautiful fort lewis washington. my wife and i, we were out on a day trip and we came across a town called centrale you. in the center of the town was this very nice monument to world war i soldiers. as a world war i guy i made a beeline for it. what shocked and surprised me was not how beautiful the statue was, but the fact that on the side of the memorial were these plaques to four dead american soldiers. what shocked me was the fact that all four had died on the 11th of november, 1919. exactly a year after the end of the great war. this puzzled me. how could this possibly have been the case? on -- fortunately there was an information kiosk nearby and i had to ask about the statue. they gave me a pamphlet. from that pamphlet and what i subsequently learned, this is the monument commemorating the centrillion massacre. on that
