: one of your colleagues in the house, dean phillips, disagrees with that. he believes joe biden is the only democrat that is capable of losing to trump, in large part because he is 81. there is no part of you that is concerned that 81 is too old to perform the duties of president of the united states? >> i don't know if the gulag i is really the expert. if you're really gonna talk about age i think the president 's round -- trump is rounding the bases on 78. what is the maybe to 65, to 75 in terms of health, pounds. my money is going to go to joe biden i think you'll have a second term. >> phillip: aren't you concerned about the polls that show other republicans, if the nominee is not trump even, beating president biden. does that concern you at all? >> i am not worried about those polls, in fact the election is almost a year away. the polls right in front of my elections said that i was losing by two or three points to dr. oz, and we all actually beat the brakes off him by five points. i don't really put much into polls, but i do put everything into president biden. i am

joe biden could lose to donald trump. he says that trump is a uniquely dangerous figure in our history. it's a secondary argument, or two steps from him kind of argument. phillipsickly joe biden's poll numbers are not great, which is true. and that somehow he is the solution. what he says is, in the polling, donald trump versus a generic democrat performs -- the generic democrat performs better than joe biden. dean phillips then says, you could call me generic if you want to. [laughter] his argument is basically that in a race between a ham sandwich and donald trump, a ham sandwich could do well, and he is happy to be the ham sandwich. but it's not clear that is an argument that would hold up beyond new hampshire. the thing with new hampshire, joe biden is not on the ballot in new hampshire. on election night when the results come in, dean phillips, his theory is he will win new hampshire. but what is winning if the incumbent president is on the ballot? i asked him what do you expect the headline to be? he said wow. geoff: president biden increasingly calling out donald trump by name and i am told by democratic officials we should expect more of that, that pres

>> first of all, what phillips is trying to do is beat joe biden in a primary. that is a hard task. when you see him walking around new hampshire you see a guy who is tapping in to something that is definitely there, a lot of frustration with joe biden, a lot of anxiety about where he is and where he stands in the polls against trump. but there is for phillips a real turn toward this very negative, saying he is too old. i said you got into this campaign saying that you were trying to strengthen biden maybe and he said that is impossible. his weakness predated me. and he's gotten into all sorts of other policy prescriptions far from where he started as a moderate. i said to him what do you make of this campaign thats is pretty far from saying that he wasn't in this to demean the president. and i said to me, it is not what i intended. things that are surprising to him and that he is getting much more -- a much more negative view of the state of democracy, the state of the democratic party and even the state of joe biden than he ever thought going in. >> didn't intend for it to be this
