i will be joined by joe scarborough ahead of super tuesday. michigan is holding it as significant. it is mitt romney's home state. i am pleased to be joined by a longtime fixture in michigan politics debbie dingell. she is president of d2 strategies based in dearborn. good to have you on this program. >> it is an honor to be here with you. tavis: let me start with the notion about michigan being romney's home state. he has not been there since he was five or six. is michigan really romney's home state or are we in the media ratcheting this up to see what happens? >> he did go to high school there. since it is long but then when he was five or six. people now think of this as his home state. if he does not win there, the dynamics will change. his family remains a very prominent family in michigan. his brother was a candidate for attorney general and was on the board at michigan state university. very good, decent man who was a leader on affirmative action in michigan. his family remains big in michigan. losing would be a big blow. tavis: social issues are playing well in michigan. i

just in terms of the standards in america, you know, i think it was joe scarborough who brought it up this morning, if the dynamics of this case were reversed and you had a black shooter kill a white man, you can imagine that the response by the police department would have been significantly different. >> joe scarborough said it this morning. two words, gail over. if it was reversed. but you know what's interesting, even when you look at the whole stand your ground law and the person one of the co-authors, dennis baxly said if you look what we've heard thus far about the merits of this case, he's not sure if in this falls under the law simply because stand your ground has to do with an issue of self-defense if someone comes as the aggressor. he said from everything we've heard about this case thus far, from one of the sponsors of the bill, that doesn't sound like that's the case in the case of martin. >> there are two things that were working in this case. number one, clearly these laws are not well written and clearly, he was able to say at the scene, i felt i was standing my ground

joe scarborough said it last night. forget me. he is a republican. he said he does not see any way at all, even given their hatred, they cannot see how mitt romney is going to rally conservative base, so how conservatives is this race going to be? >> things change so fast. i think obama will win, but i do not think it is a slam dunk. tavis: do you think it is a close race? >> while i was writing this book, "while america sleeps," lashed your, things look really bad for the president last year. things change really fast breeder it can change again, if there is a downturn in the economy. and people have short memories. they are going to forget about all of the dumb stuff mitt romney said. tavis: unless he keeps saying dumb stuff. >> i think this could get close, and here is the point that you and i agree on. the worst thing the president can do is undercut his credibility by not looking like a man of the people, which he truly is compared to romney. it makes the other 99% think they are not part of the process, so all of the people were excited about a

rick santorum today, accused our friend joe scarborough of making too much of the contraception issue. it's people that are making too much of the contraception issue. they are the one who is have made this an issue from the very beginning. i have to say something about senator john mccain because i know all of us in the mainstream love to talk about what a statesman he is and it's great he spoke out. he voted for the blunt amendment several weeks ago that would have made it possible for employers to not cover any medical care that they disapproved of. what hypocrisy to say i'm the man standing up on the war against women but you have that vote in your back pocket. it's really disturbing. >> bill, last week, lisa spoke out against the gop's car on women after she too voted for the blunt amendment. what are we seeing? is this damage control,000 that you've seen two prominent senators come out and say we've got to fix this. >> the fact that they are starting to see that the politics for this are so bad, it's surprising that more republicans aren't seeing it faster. >> why aren't we hear

. >> so michael, that sounds good on paper but as we played earlier with joe scarborough saying that alabama, mitt romney in his opinion will lose, mississippi, that's a loss, louisiana, that's a loss. this is a republican candidate who will not be strong in the south, but steve writes in his article, listen, this is knot about the social conservatives versus the establishment because if he's a rhino or not, his party will get behind him eventually if he's the nominee. >> yes and no. some weaknesses were exposed for governor romney and the fact that he can't get to 30% in any of those southern states thus far is a real problem in terms of turnout in the fall. and i would couple that, tamron, with the observation that turnout in this primary season, despite what happened in 2010, lags behind 2008. so there's a real enthusiasm gap. even if romney captures the nomination as i still think he will, you have to question what kind of turnout is there going to be against barack obama in the southern base. >> steve, is that a concern for you? >> yes, i think what's happening here is there's a

i heard a republican commentator on another channel, i'll be honest, it was joe scarborough on msnbcing if you took the pictures of trayvon martin and transpose them into a 17-year-old white kid and then you transposed george zimmerman into a 28-year-old black man that's twice the size, how would you feel about this particular story and how would it be portrayed? and are you looking for how would you look for guilt or innocence on the part of each side? >> i hear this conversation a lot. let's be honest, we're not going to be back here in three weeks talking about white kids being killed in record numbers. not talking about white kids being stopped and frisked in new york city at record number. we're not going to talk about white people being in put in prison at record numbers. we know -- if we're going to be honest with each other, if we want to walk that elephant out of the room which is race in this country, let's be honest and let's at least agree that young black men, young brown men, young latino men are being targeted in every neighborhood in this country and every community i

and i'm also telling everybody i know in alabama as i march from selma that i know joe scarborough -- reverend, tell us about the march. obviously steeped in history, that march from selma to montgomery. you're marching for a couple of causes. tell us about it this morning. >> well, 47 years ago, the march from selma to montgomery was to get the right to vote. john lewis who is a congressman now and jose williams was literally beaten on the bridge in selma and dr. martin luther king led a five-day march, 54 miles. and the drama of that -- 47 years later, martin luther king iii and i marched on sunday which celebrated that day. but then we are not reenacting the march, we're extending it. because all over the country, 34 states have voter i.d. laws that we have seen the studies, will disenfranchise 5 million voters. there's no evidence that the fraud they're trying to solve is a widespread problem. there's only been three cases in alabama since 2003 when they already put voter i.d. laws in. that is much more expansive and much fairer. so we're here about voter i.d. we're here because t
