kpix 5 joe vasquez caught up with the organizers. joe. >> i got to tell you, it was tense out here for the journalists who are covering it, for the folks, for the patriot rally, for the organizers. at all times, we are looking over our shoulders worried there will be clashes between these particular protesters and counterprotesters. patriot, prayer folks insists they are not white supremacists, that they come in peace, but did ask why, considering the events in charlottesville, did they decide to have this event here in san francisco. it was planned ahead of time, but why did they continue to go through with it so soon afterward, and note that the organizer, joey gibson, shushed another reporter during his answer, and some of his entourage started yelling about how that was an unfair question. >> why is it that when antifa does the stuff they do, no one ever speaks out? why is it when antifa goes and burns down the country, why is it we don't have politicians that come up and say, hey, antifa, you need to not protest for however long

joe vasquez, kpix5. >> a trump supporters car was targeted. the vandal spray painted nazi and kkk on the windows. they also slashed all four tires. the owner tells us he filed a police report. >> north korea flexing its military muscle again. tonight the u.s. defense department confirming, the north launched a missile that flew right over japan. >> reporter: the pentagon confirmed the launch and tonight it's still assessing the situation. the north launch it had unidentified ballistic missile. that missile flew east nearly 1700 miles and reached a height of 341 miles. they said the missile broke into three pieces and landed in the pick. the cabinet secretary of japan called it an unprecedented, serious, and great threat. he promised a firm response from tokyo. the pentagon says the missile did not fly far enough to be a threat to the united states. >> this bay area mayor came under fire for his facebook post, now he's resigned. but tonight some city council members told us that's not enough. >> the trail of destruction in two bay area cities.

kpix 5's joe vasquez reports from berkeley with the very latest. >> you have been outed as a neo- nazi. >> reporter: tensions grew throughout the -- throughout the day from large shouting -- [ inaudible ] to punching -- >> hey, no -- [ bleep ] >> reporter: hundreds of police officers barricaded the park. protected the tiny group of right wing demonstrators as the much larger wing of left wing counterdemonstrators pushed in and grew larger. then around 1:00 a dramatic scene. a large group out of nowhere marched up. at least 100 people wearing all black. they call themselves antifa which stands for antifa shies. the chief made the decision to abandon the park. >> by 1:00 this afternoon i don't know if we had 10 of the folks from the original protests. and thousands of people for counterprotestors. and the question has to be does it make sense to get into a major use of force over grassy area? >> reporter: and the counterdemonstrators set off a purple smoke bomb, the signal to push aside barricades and push in. they took the park over and flew the flag of anarchy and celebrated. police es

joe vasquez, thank you for your report. gibson raced down a street >>> well, joey gibson, founder of patriot prayer, showed up this afternoon in berkeley and soon he found himself being chased by antifa activists and pepper sprayed. gibson kept retreating down the street along with a man in shoulder pads who appeared to be his bodyguard. a short time later officers put gibson and that second man in handcuffs, but police say this was actually a rescue to protect them from the group pursuing them. neither man was arrested. gibson had planned a patriot prayer rally yesterday at san francisco's crissy field, but you probably know by now that was canceled because of fear of violence. >>> take a look here. >>> in another incident police detained one woman, but she tried to make a break for it after she was let go. officers took her back into custody. >>> chopper 5 found a sniper standing guard on top of a berkeley rooftop where hundreds of protesters gathered right below him. >>> hundreds gathered this morning for a unity rally.
