joe vazquez is outside children's hospital tonight with more on the family's very difficult decision. joe. >> reporter: family members are besides themselves as earlier this afternoon they made the emotionally wrenching decision to "pull the plug." 1-year-old hiram lawrence, junior, was shot in west oakland on november 28 along with six other people of. he has been here at children's hospital in critical condition with a head wound on life support since that time. while the hospital told the family the boy was ready to come off life support, the family as recently as yesterday didn't believe that. they wanted a second opinion. they wanted the decision delayed until next week but according to the family's attorney and their pastor, the family was convinced today after several tests among them they poured water in the boy's ear. no response. the family's own pediatrician then confirmed with the family that these tests were negative that the boy wasn't responsive so family members and friends in the room broke out in tears as the decision was made that he would be taken off life support.
