kpix 5's joe vazquez is there live with what the city is testing out to try deter it from repeating. joe? >> reporter: yeah. this attack has really left the community rattled. the violent assault caught on camera. a man knocked out flat. police say it happened during a robbery by these three men at stockton and pacific july 15. 1:09p.m. in the afternoon. investigators released this surveillance video hoping the public can help. police say the men attacked a 56-year-old man, throwing him to the grounds. when another man, a 69-year-old man tried to help, they knocked him out cold. the suspects stole a watch from the first victim. both were treated for head injuries and released from the hospital. >> this can happen anywhere. i ask people be aware of their surroundings. >> reporter: they are working with business owners who have been reluctant to report crimes. there have been 221 robberies in this district this year. 14 have been in china town. >> seven of those were cell phone robberies. so doesn't occur very often. but i think it is also because of the nature of the incidents. >> the

. >> joe vazquez spoke to one of the men just a few minutes after they were brought to safety. >> reporter: take a look. a building part of the millennium tower. that is where two men were stuck and had to be rescued from the fire department. the platform motor malfunctioned and one of the men tells me that resulted in them being stuck on the platform for four hours. the fire department was called, the ladder truck extended as high as it could go but it fell short. it only went 9 floors up so they dragged the men through a 10th story window. he was not scared but you could tell it was a bit of an adventure. >> the motor stopped working so we tried to fix it and it wouldn't work anymore. so the fire department came. >> reporter: how long were you up there? >> four hours or so. >> what was that like? >> crazy. >> both men declined medical treatment and they went on their way this afternoon. the other man did not want to talk to reports. the fire department said they train for this sort of thing and they always hope for the outcome they had today which was rescue where everybody was just fine

kpix 5's joe vazquez joins us live from the upper deck to show us the fix. >>> i am standing on the bridge. two lanes are closed and one lane is open. cars are whizzing past to this project. under the is the very last joint now being replaced. caltrans's work crews began pouring concrete just less than an hour ago. they are building and installing the last of 31 expansion joints on the upper deck of the richmond felt ridge. >> the last joint has been put in place. while we were working on the joints we had to have still lays. they felt a bump that slowed traffic down. that is done. >> reporter: the replacement project began in march with jackhammers and blowtorches as workers had to demolish the existing joints and then replace them with new ones. the work it comes as the result of an incident on february 7. an expansion joint part sending chunks of concrete down onto cars on the deck below. nobody was hurt but there was an all day traffic jam. some of the joints had wear-and- tear. they decided to replace all 61 joints which were built back in the 50s. this project on the westbound lanes

joe vazquez, kpix5 news. two now on to fire watch, a brush fire that broke out in contra costa county is under investigation. it burned along the hillside of franklin canyon road and martinez. it scorched about six acres. fire crews believe it may have been caused by fireworks and they are worried that people will be setting off more of them through the weekend. >> we are concerned that there are probably still a lot of illegal fireworks out there. we are concerned there may be more fires, like we had last night, tonight and tomorrow night. >> so far contra costa fire has not responded to at least 38 fires blame from illegal fireworks. the fireworks were banned in contra costa county. it did or he didn't stop people from shooting them off. fire department officials say they have been warned about the dangers in contra costa county, but apparently some people just don't get it. >> as soon as the sun starts to go down and people start letting off their fireworks and firecrackers, we just pretty much go from inc

joe vazquez with the latest on this investigation, joe? >> reporter: san francisco police say they really want to talk to the driver involved in this crash because they say he abandoned his car, leaving some pretty seriously injured young teenagers inside. police say speed was a factor in this crash into a hydrant that sent fountains of water 30 feet in the air. the sheer force of the collision broke the car in two. this was the scene around 1:30 this morning at 3rd street and carol in the bay view. the four people inside the silver mazda were injured. one victim is in the hospital with broken bones. the ages ranged from 15 to 19. police say they don't know much about the driver because he disappeared, walked away from the scene. >> call the investigator, and if you know what happened, tell us. >> reporter: troy dangerfield is the new captain in charge of the bay view district. he's asking for the public's help identifying the driver and wants the driver to talk to investigators and explain what happened. >> sometimes people get themselves
