joel brown has more. >> reporter: the senate may be cutting its holiday recess short but it is unclear how much work will get done. republicans and democrats remain at odds over how to raise the nation adebt limit. the biggest sticking point is taxes. >> the last thing employers need is further disincentives to not hire people. and that's what the higher taxes would mean. >> while the g.o.p. wants tax hikes off the table, democrats say they're needed to carve the $2.5 trillion out of the deficit republicans demand. >> democrats are calling for so- called revenue raisers including ending tax breaks for oil companies and corporations that send jobs overseas. democrats are also calling for the elimination of subsidies for corporate jet owners. congress has about four weeks before the treasury department says the government will start to default on its bills. with time running out and so much at stake, there's talk lawmakers could agree on a short term deal. a smaller compromise could keep the government running for another six to eight months and include cuts negotiators have already agre

joel brown, cbs news, washington. >>> 4:50 now. the families of two uc berkeley garage walts still being held in iran are taking part in a hunger strike now. shane and josh have been held on spying charges for nearly two years now. sara shourd who was arrested with them was released last fall. now they went on a hunger strike to be protest for letters being cut off from the families. family members launched their own strike to show solidarity. >>> damage from an oil spill at yellowstone river. a pipeline ruptured on friday spewing about 42,000 gallons of crude into the famous waterway. the damage is limited but montana's governor says it's silly to make such a claim so early in the television. environmental protection agency says only a small fraction of the spilled oil is likely to be recovered. no word yet what caused that pipe to burst. >>> it is now known what caused one of the biggest wild fires in new mexico's history. fire officials say a tree falling on a power line sparked the fire that erupted back on june 26 in los alamo

joel brown, cbs news, kennedy space center. >>> 4:37 now. for the tenth time this year, someone has been hit and killed on caltrain tracks. caltrain says a passenger on the tracks was hit near the churchill avenue overcrossing. that's in palo alto at about 8:40 last night. passengers were taken around the scene on buses until the tracks re-opened about 11:00. >>> two men are under arrest for a stabbing at a vta light rail station. two people were stabbed. they are expected to recover. it happened at the civic center station in downtown san jose at around 11:00 last night. the santa clara county sheriff's department is investigating because it does handle all of the crimes on vta light rail platforms. >>> the president of the texas rangers says the baseball team is deeply saddened that a fan died last night after a fall during a game with the as. in the second inning, the spectator named shannon stone was trying to catch a ball tossed to him. there he goes. it was tossed by a texas outfielder after a foul ball by oakland's conor jackson. ston

joel brown, cbs news. washington. >>> we have breaking news out of daly city. a fatal accident has shut down part of 280 northbound. we mentioned this at the top of the show. elizabeth wenger is there with the very latest. elizabeth. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, grace. that's right. they got a pretty large area completely blocked off. we are in daly city northbound 280 ramp to 19th avenue. again, a very popular spot for commuters. as you can see, they have the flares out there right now. this is what sounds like a two- car crash. it just came in around 4:00. major injuries involved in the crash. we are told there is a body apparently lying in the road. so of we have an estimated time of opening this ramp close to 5:00 so again so this could be shut down for a little while longer. as an alternate, if you are coming up northbound 280 and trying to get into the city, use the junipero serra or san jose avenue off-ramps as your alternates. as you can see, the roads are slick. there's a misty drizzle going on right now. so obviously, slick surfaces could be cause
