"the new censorship" explores fundamental contradictions of our modern global existence. why in an age defined by information are the people who bring us the news dying in record numbers? y. at a time when technology was supposed to make censorship impossible isn't actually on the rise? let's start off with some raw numbers. according to cpj database last two years have been the most deadly and dangerous for journalists in history. a record number of journalists have been killed. a record number are in prison. freedom of expression is on the wane according to independent advocacy core. in "the new censorship" what i try to do is address these issues not in theoretical terms but based on my own experience as executive director of the committee to protect journalism. so the book opens

. >> joel, how do you think cpj's method of rigorously researching journalists and advocating hospital. effective are they against this democrators. the basis of their legitimacy is -- they're against the west. the press freedom is a western value and they're generally impervious to the advocacy campaigns. >> guest: i don't think they're impervious. the narrative they have -- they may be against the west because they have a sort of power critique of the west, but they self-identify as democracies. and their legitimacy is derived from their ability to win elections. if they can't -- that's the difference between a traditional dictatorship and democaators. they can actually win an election and if they've can't, their power -- either they become a traditionol dictator or they lose power. so, the question is what do they do with the power they have? and they in most instances try to argue that their actions are legitimate because they conform to democratic norms. i took that being able to demonstrate this is not in fact the case is a very valid and effective strategy, and it's worked prett

we are pleased to have kathleen carroll and joel simon for this conversation.ournalism is an increasingly dangerous profession. no one knows this more than our guests tonight. joel simon is director of the committee to protect journalists, organization founded in 1981 by a group of u.s. correspondence to realize they couldn't ignore the dangers around the world are facing. research and advocacy are focused on defending the right to journalists to report. forever in the world journalists are attacked, and present, killed, kidnapped, threatened, censored or her past comest dpj takes action. when journalists can speak for themselves, see p.j. speaks up on their behalf. i know this because before coming to new york as a journalist in the cities and see p.j. is the group that would run to whenever we were in trouble. see p.j. has played a key role in raising awareness about the killings of journalists in my country and elsewhere around the world. journalists need to be positioned to talk about how the landscape of threats have changed in the past two years. his new

joel, great of you to be here. thank you so much.e of more than 40%, everybody praises you on all sides of the aisle. you have this job of chancellor of the new york city schools for longer than anybody else ever had it. and you think you know the reason as to why the schools are struggling. what is it? >> basic reason is we're not getting the job done for kids in high poverty communities. you know, we have rules and regulations that get in the way of getting great teachers into these schools creating choices for families, opening up charter schools which are opposed by many of the interests. so think about it everyone is looking, they want a great school for their kid. middle class families go out there, they look, they move to the right neighborhood, they go to a private school. poor kids, we tell them it's one and done. we give them a lot of new teachers each year. it's unstable and not working. so to me the biggest thing is, one, we've got to make teaching a real profession. and second of all, give families choices. the families
