joel: it's a really important topic.things like this that are part of the zeitgeist, we kind of double down and spend more time than we would otherwise to really help people understand what is going on. why here? why pay gap? why now? joel: it's a bigger conversation happening. women in the workplace, #metoo, how that is all becoming manages did in our culture is what we are trying to put the finger on the pulse of. specifically with this pay gap section, what's happening is a u.k. moment. big companies in the u.k. are having to put data into the open that is unadulterated. they have to show how women get paid versus how many get paid. carol: it's revealing data. i was like, what? the differences are stunning. >> it does seem like we are not only is there the will to start thinking about these things, but the data is out there. and really being able to pull it all together is a conversation that can't easily be set aside. the headlines keep coming, the companies keep revealing their numbers. joel: there's a deadline. it

joel: correct. this is how when we look at business and what we try to do with businessweek is the intersection of all of this. you can't look at these in isolation. they are all interconnected. you start pulling on one thread and it affects something somewhere else. we have a global supply chain. everything is connected now. so how politics and economics and everything -- this is why this issue is the must-read. carol: i love that you said you can't look at anything in isolation. having said that, china is big about promoting its own interests. it has its own long-term plan and nothing seems to be able to remove them from that. joel: and that is why this collision is happening. you got a trump "make america great" nationalist agenda running against xi's and china's. both of those things are intended to be long-term visions, and i don't see either of those visions being anything that anyone is going to take a foot off the accelerator. carol: no. jason: football three accelerator. really good transit

joel: it is an open question. one that the marketplace should have a chance to decide on this. carol: but it also takes executive compensation, right? it ties it to longer vesting schedules. joel: all of it, it opens up everything. what happens though, to bring this to market, a stock exchange is a lot of paperwork. iex is the closest thing we have had to this idea -- it took a really long time. nasdaq, the new york stock exchange held it up for a long time before it actually came out. one of the things eric reis has done with this idea is partner with iex. it has given him a bit of a partnership to feel about this space. carol: but this is still just an idea? joel: it is still just a theory. taylor: sticking with the tech theme as we will navigate to the wall. we talk about the concrete wall, but the story in the features section we talk about electronic wall along the border with mexico. joel: the wall being president trump's favorite tweet, which we all are familiar with, he wants to build a wall. it turns out

joel: food in general has very thin margins. as consumers have shifted taste away from packaged foods that sit on shelves, it is a question of where is a company like kraft heinz going to see growth? taylor: what do they say? have we heard from them on earnings calls? what is their story? are they going to push for organic growth? can they try to go into something more sexy that millennials are buying? joel: it is all eyes on them. this is after just after the unilever thing did not work out. now the markets are starting to look at this and say this is a company that was basically built on private equity style takeover, financial engineering. are they going to be able to find something different, or will this be a different craft-heinz going forward. carol: what is interesting, too, and you see some of the deals that are happening in the packaged food business, especially those cap starters, people have to pay up because the valuations are going up. it gets expensive. joel: exactly. it is always going to be driven by consumers.

[applause] >> thank you very much, and thank you all for being here. it's a great pleasure having so many old friends and family members as well as new friends. i'm very enthusiastic and excited to be here, and appreciate the invitation of fraunces tavern which is such a wonderful monument to the revolution. when i first proposed writing a book about chief justice john marshall to my editor at penguin, he was a little bit reluctant at my previous book unlikely allies, true story about a merchant, playwright and a cross-dressing french spy save the american revolution, and i eventually convinced him that we should go along with this book and he said you just got to promise me to find cross-dressing french spy. and i did. [laughing] so the one thing probably most of you know about john marshall is that he wrote this very famous probably most famous decision of the supreme court marbury v. madison which establishes the principle of judicial review which means the supreme court can strike
