joining us live now is district four supervisor joel engardio, who introduced this measure to supervisor engardio. thanks for your time today. >> absolutely great to be here. okay >> so tell us about the measure. what does it seek to change? >> we want to bring back eighth grade algebra to san francisco public schools. people are surprised when they find out we banned the ability to take algebra in the eighth grade about nine years ago. now, almost every city in the bay area offers ayers algebra. in eighth grade and sometimes seventh grade. if the kids are eager and have a good ability. but here in san francisco, we make all the kids wait till ninth grade at and it gets them behind. they can't get to calculus by senior year and the kids who are really good at math, who excel at math, who love math, we're punishing them by not letting them take algebra earlier. so it's a it's a policy that that is just needs to be changed. and so that's why we're going to the ballot to tell the school district, you must bring algebra back to the eighth grade. >> there's so much to unpack there. i guess we

joel engardio and refill mandelman all 3 are in favor of the move.eskin released a statement in opposition and we're awaiting responses from the rest of them. the rest to be a majority vote in order for this to pass supervisor. it is also calling for a review of the city's treatment on demand mandate. the measure imposed by voters in 2008 requires the city's department of public health to provide adequate available and low-cost resources to meet the demand for substance use disorder treatment. but at today's supervisors meeting mandelman and supervisor catherine stefani said they are not sure that the city's department of public health is meeting all of its obligations to help people struggling with addiction. >> one of the things we have from prior treatment of the man reports and hearings is the department public health insist that we're basically meeting our treatment on demand obligations and then we typically have a fight or at least on our guns on a fight that's too strong. argument where where who are on on the ground trying to provide trying

san francisco supervisor asha safai and joel engardio support that move. lan to introduce a ballot measure for san francisco voters to make the change happen. now, in a tweet explaining the move, supervisor engardio says it's not just a matter of academics, but also financial health for sfusd saying, quote, a quarter of our kids attend private school, compared to only 9% in california for a policy against eighth grade, algebra is a big factor when families decide to leave public schools when their child reaches middle school. engardio added to that that lower enrollment in public schools ends up meaning less resources and money for the district in general. and that is not a good thing. so if supervisor does move forward with this ballot measure, they plan to introduce it to the board of supervisors. at their meeting today. if it ends up ending on the ballot for san francisco voters to decide, they'd have a chance to vote on it. in this spring's city wide election. if it passes, it wouldn't require sfusd to bring back eighth grade algebra. but the idea is th
